What Are Some Ideal Adhesives for Bonding Glass?

by Peter John Writer

When it comes to hot melt adhesives, bonding glass is a challenge. Using glass is not the same as using seams. Rather, working with glass includes dealing with environmental changes with an invisible bond. Wahile using adhesives to bond class to itself or a substrate, a plan must be outlined. The adhesive must be able to create a tight bond that is easy to see and flexible. When dealing with bonding glass, a hot melt adhesive manufacturer with years of experience can assist.

Hot Melt Glue Guns and Stick Guns

When a very small amount of adhesives is to be accurately applied, hot melt glue is used. The glue removes trails and is useful in small spaces in packaging and kitchen installations. However, before beginning, there are a few items to take note of. The first step is to ensure the glass is clean so adhesives will stick to it rather than slipping off. The second step is to help the glue stay strong by roughing up the soon-to-be bonded areas. Lastly, not all glue sticks are meant for this job. The glue stick used must be able to be applied and work on hard surfaces.

Silicone Adhesives

Silicone is a liquid adhesive that appeals and feels like a gel. Coming in high-temp, multi-purpose, and electric-grade types, silicone is versatile. Commercial grade devices can be used to apply silicone, along with crafting glue guns. Silicone is the perfect choice to fit in bonds since glass does not shrink as much as other materials. Silicone is also weather resistant. It is common to use silicone to bond glass.

Epoxy

Another adhesive is epoxy. Epoxy can be used on glass and is stable and temperature resistant. Since epoxies are clear, the adhesive is ideal to use in high-visibility areas. An example of this would be glass installation. The adhesive resists chemicals and works perfectly in industrial settings. Aerospace and medical equipment can benefit from the use of epoxy. Additionally, epoxies can resist degradation that is commonly caused by weather, ozone, oxygen, jet fuels, gasoline, water, and more.

Super Glue

Superglue, also known as Cyanoacrylate, is used on different substrates. The glue is non-hot melt and is perfect for glass since it is strong, clear, and waterproof. Creating a fragile and long-lasting bond is possible with super glue. While a great adhesive candidate, high strength requirements should be avoided. Rather super glue should be utilized for delicate uses.
