Intially all S E crawl the websites to know about those pages. Each and every websites are different from others and have differ types of data. Once SE Crawlers finds crawl all pages around the world and store them into their giant database. After crawling a web page the next work is to index all pages and calculating relevancy. When a search engine crawl a web page or any type of web doc, at that time they do not calculate value of website that's why they rank the site anywhere (it may be on first page). After few hours S. E. calculate the actual value and then give the right position/rank to website.

What Things Search Engines DO Not Like?

These Websites are works by crawlers and crawlers cannot read images as i mentioned in upper para so you should not use more images on your website if you wish to make your website more SEO friendly, Crawlers also hate to read java scripts, video. You know what, why crawlers can read only not see videos, image, flash and java script because it is unreadable.
