What Are Dental Bridges?
by Neil Kemp Dentist near Pennant HillsMaybe you have heard about
dental bridges, and perhaps you haven’t. But dental bridges are one of the best
ways to fill a gap in a smile when one or two teeth are missing. Dealing with
missing teeth, no matter if it is just one can make anyone feel less confident.
This can be exceedingly true when dealing with a front tooth that is missing,
or when in a more visible location.
Dental bridges solve the
problem of unsightly gaps in the smile and are a long-lasting solution. For
those that have considered dental implants for a missing tooth, dental bridges
are often more affordable and produce similar results. Bridges are more
comfortable to the wearer, and in most patients’ perspectives, they tend to
forget they are even there. When having a bridge placed by a pennant
hills dentist, you may be overjoyed at
the results, because they look so natural. The crown that makes up the
restoration will often be made of porcelain, which mimics the look of a natural
tooth.
The only downside with
dental bridges is that the crown is bonded to your other teeth. These are often
exceedingly healthy teeth, too, which could be at risk for damage due to the
bridge. Most dentists will shave the side of the tooth to make it more open to
adhesion with the artificial tooth. This will be done to each tooth on either
side of the gap. This can open those teeth up to possible tooth decay if the
person doesn’t care for their teeth.
When you have a dental bridge
installed, you’ll notice that there isn’t much change in your daily routine.
You can still brush and floss the same. Eating and drinking aren’t affected by
having the bridge, and in some cases, it is improved. Another advantage of
replacing your missing tooth with a dental bridge is to prevent alignment
problems. When there’s a gap in the smile, teeth will shift to the open area,
which will cause alignment issues.
While dental bridges are an excellent choice for replacing a missing tooth, it isn’t the only option. The latest advancement in dentistry, which is now over 20 years old, is dental implants. Implants allow your dentist to fit you for a more permanent restoration. These can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all the teeth. But dental bridges are still one of the most affordable ways to get your smile back and have a better bite force than dentures.
