The start of Navaratra means different things for different people - fasting, pooja, pandals, Falguni Pathak songs - but for many young Jaipurites, it only means dandiya nights with no curfew. After learning a few steps so as to not mutilate their partners with dandiya sticks and carefully choosing the trendiest ghaghra-choli, Jaipur girls have one more very important thing to check off their to-do list: back polishing. Over the last couple of years, the trend of backless cholis has picked up in the city, and with top Bollywood actresses flaunting their backs on screen, Jaipur girls are flocking to parlours for a quick sitting of back polishing. We spoke to a few city parlours, who confirm that this is the time the demand for body and back polishing skyrockets.

Demand for back polishing goes up in Navratri: City parlours say that back polishing, which is otherwise quite popular with only brides, becomes the service that is requested the most during Navratri. Indira Joshi, owner, Jawed Habib beauty parlour, says, "A lot of people have started enquiring about body polishing now, because the wedding season is also coming up, but the very specific requests that we get for back polishing by girls during Navaratra is because of the trend of backless cholis for dandiya nights. A lot of girls have tanned areas on their backs, so depending on how much tanning there is, we suggest them the number of sittings it'll take."

Ritu Deswal, owner, Style n Scissors, says, "Neck and back are the two areas girls suddenly start to pay attention to during Navaratra, so we get a lot of requests for body polishing in these days. People want to get back polishing done according to their garba dresses, so we do just back polishing for `1,000 and full body polishing in `3,500. We also have special offers like red wine body polishing, which are quite in demand during this time."

Shabana Khanam, manager, Kaya Kalp, says that they start getting these enquiries towards the end of shradhs. "The demand always goes up during Navaratra, because girls want to look their best on dandiya nights, otherwise body and back polishing is popular with would-be brides. We have a whole kit where we exfoliate, massage and polish the back, and these services begin from `2,500."

Time to flaunt backless cholis: Says 20-year-old BCom student Nandini Seth, "Navratra is the only time my parents let me wear anything backless, because they accompany me to all dandiya nights. I go off with my friends while they have their own company. I always feel a little conscious before wearing a backless choli. Last year, I went for back polishing with a couple of friends, and it really made a difference."

Temp tattoos also in demand: But a smooth, polished back isn't the only thing girls like to flaunt with their backless cholis. Ritu says that they also get a lot of requests for temporary back tattoos during this time. Says 22-year-old MBA student Sonalika Mohanty, "I have an appointment for back polishing in a couple of days, because I bought three backless cholis to wear to dandiya nights, but my friends and I were also discussing getting a temporary back tattoo. My mother's never going to let me get a permanent tattoo, so this might be a good time to sport a temporary one."
