It is also very important to remember that the energy efficiency of products is only comparable among items that are similar. Comparing the energy consumption of a freezer and an air conditioner would not be logical in any way.

1. Proper insulation. Most of the energy that is consumed in a home is usually used for cooling and heating. Carrying out proper insulation in your home will help you reduce your energy bill drastically. This is because the insulation can help keep your house warm and you will not have to incur the heating charges.
2. Upgrade your appliances. Older appliances tend to consume more energy when compared to new ones. It would thus be advisable that you do away with those energy appliances that consume a lot of energy and you will see the changes. Your heating, cooling and ventilation appliances should also be changed since newer versions have a higher efficiency and they will definitely improve your energy efficiency rating.
3. Developing an energy conserving culture. Small things such as switching off the television when you are not using it or switching off the lights when you leave a room could really save a lot on energy in the long run.
