is one of the fourteen districts and located in the north east side of Kerala. In
recent years, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of tourists
visiting wayanad, which point out that tourism contributes a lot to the economy
of wayanad. About 30% of wayanad is comprised of thick forest which makes it a
perfect destination for both domestic and international visitors who would love
to emerge in the uncorrupted beauty of nature.
Since
it is a land locked district surrounded by Tamilnadu on the left and Karnataka
on the top, the best way to get there is by means of road. Ghat roads are the
major road types in wayanad. The nearest airport is Karipur International
Airport which is situated about 50 miles away in its neighboring district,
Kozhikode. Tourists can get directed cab services to wayanad from the airport
cab service station.
Climate of
wayanad is warm and pleasant which makes it a perfect spot for
tourism. During the winter, temperature can even go less than 5 degree Celsius
and in summer it can reach up to 35 degree or even more. Tourists are welcomed
in all season because summer is the
perfect time for trekking and rock climbing as the level of water in streams and falls will be low while rainy
season is best suited for those who like to enjoy swimming in the natural lakes
and falls.
There
are different options for staying in wayanad which includes home stay, resorts
and hotels. Home stays are the most common and the cheapest method of stay in
wayanad. Tourists can choose from a wide variety of hotels and resorts
according to the needs. Even though resorts are expensive, they provide a
better service, so it is mostly preferred by foreign tourists. Hotels mainly
concentrate on those tourists whose time period of stay is less. So, the local
tourists who have less time period of stay mainly depend on Hotels for their accommodation.
Food
is another major attraction in wayanad. Wayanad offers a variety of cuisines
including the traditional Kerala cuisines and international cuisines which
consist of Italian, Chinese, Thai varieties and much more. The international cuisines are available in
almost all the hotels, resorts and even in some home stays. This is mainly due
to the increase in number of international visitors in recent years.
Wayanad is a bio-diverse, eco friendly,
protected region which is famous for its tropical mountains, landscapes, lakes
and thick forests. Wayanad Tourism Organization (WTO) and Wayanad
Eco Tourism Organization (WETO) are two non commercial organizations that protect
Eco friendly tourism in
wayanad. Tourists, if in need,
can get any help from these organizations and also from the Kerala tourism
department.
