Vivo V17 First look

by Gourab B. PHP developer

Shortly after the launch of the Vivo V17 Pro, the Chinese company has introduced a new model with a slightly lower positioning, the new Vivo V17. Like his brother, this phone is designed primarily for photography enthusiasts and uses the hardware and software of his camera as his main Internet service providers. With an official price in Rs. 22,990, Vivo will have to use the value of its brand and its offline reach to compete with the frontline value giants such as Xiaomi and Realme.

The Vivo V17 is a somewhat tall phone, with a Super AMOLED Full HD + 20 screen: 9 1080 × 2400 pixels of 6.44 inches that occupies almost the entire front of the device. The chin is relatively narrow, but most people's attention will be focused on the front camera built into the screen. This is what is known as a "drilling machine" design in the upper right corner.

The camera hole is much smaller and less disruptive than what we have seen in other phones that have tested the same design. There is almost no dead space around the camera, and there is much visible content around it. However, there is a silver ring around the lens, which is reflective and attracts attention when the phone changes slightly, which we found very annoying. Vivo has also installed a screen protector on the V17, and it also has a cutout around the camera that constantly catches the eye.

We have the Glacier Ice version of this phone, which is the now common iridescent white finish that we have seen from several manufacturers in the mid-range and premium spaces. You will see swirls of color when you tilt this phone in any direction. The white back is well compensated by a matte metallic edge. There will also be a darker option in the Midnight Ocean in India.

As for what it looks like, the Vivo V17 is quite elegant. However, it doesn't feel very premium. Many other models in this price range use glass and metal, and they feel more solid than Vivo V17 plastic. We must also keep in mind that Vivo has launched this phone in other countries with a very different design for the camera module on the back and a camera notch instead of a hole in the front, so don't look for photos and reviews you can see online now. .

Vivo V17 has a 13 megapixel front camera located in a small hole in the screen

Upon reaching the cameras, there is a rectangular bulge two columns wide at the back, which is also a style that we are beginning to see a lot now. The camera bump is slightly raised, but not enough to make it difficult to operate this phone. On the left, we have three camera lenses of equal size and spaced one below the other, with a smaller lens and a flash module positioned next to them asymmetrically. This is very different in the Glacier Ice version, and it is not so noticeable against the color of the Midnight Ocean, which you might want to consider.

Vivo has equipped the V17 with a 48 megapixel primary rear camera with an f / 1.8 aperture. Next, there is an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera of 120 degrees with an f / 2.2 aperture, followed by a 2-megapixel depth sensor (referred to by Vivo as a "bokeh camera") and, finally, a 2-macro camera megapixels We have seen very similar configurations on several recent low-cost phones, including the very popular Realme 5s (Review) and Redmi Note 8 (Review) that are priced significantly lower. The individual front camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels and an aperture of f / 2.45.

The big promise here is the quality of low-light photography for the front and rear cameras. Vivo is promoting its Super Night mode that says it captures multiple frames and uses custom algorithms to reduce noise and improve detail in photos. We have not been able to prove these claims, but we will definitely pay close attention to the quality of low-light photography in our full review. The other outputs of Vivo are ultra stable video recording, the same Pose Master function for the composition of selfies that we saw in the V17 Pro (Review) and multiple camera modes for creative expression.

Vivo V17 has four rear cameras, including a 2 megapixel macro camera

Beyond the cameras, the V17 features the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor. Our unit has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, and it seems that there are no other variants in India at the time of launch. There is a 4500 mAh battery and support for fast charging, with an 18 W charger included in the box. Vivo also states that its next-generation screen fingerprint sensor is faster and more accurate than before.

Vivo seems to have done a good job here with the design, and has chosen features and specifications that many other manufacturers are also promoting at the moment. However, the Vivo V17 faces very established competition and can obtain similar hardware and cameras for much less money. In fact, several models offer almost flagship class hardware at this price level today.

Despite these promising features, Indian buyers are very price sensitive, so it is interesting to see that Vivo has positioned this phone above Rs. 20,000 In terms of specifications, the competition, including Xiaomi, Realme, Samsung, Motorola and others, has several attractive options that are priced lower. Stay tuned for Gadgets 360, as our full review of the Vivo V17 approaches, and we can immerse ourselves in the details of the design, usability, performance, cameras, battery life and much more of this phone.
