Visiting Sardinia

by World Nioki Go Travel
Sardinia is one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean. It is an autonomous region of Italy and fiercely defends its own unique identity. It is as far away from the rest of Europe as it is from Africa, which shapes its characteristics and air.

The island is one of the safest places in Italy and so your trip to the region will not be dangerous at all. As for its beauty, Sardinia is made up of a variety of landscapes, from its long coastline to its valleys and mountain ranges.

This piece of European land is one of the richest in history, something you will certainly notice during your tour. A typical example is the prehistoric Nuragi dwellings. You will definitely spot some of them, as they are scattered all over the island. Sardinia is also encircled by several islands, thanks to which it has gained a reputation as both a historical and modern travel destination.

While on the island, don't miss the Neolithic archaeological site of the Monte d'Accoddi temple, the Azinara National Park and the impressive Coral Museum. If you like horse riding opt for a horseback tour, and if you're travelling in spring visit the Sant' Efisio Festival held in May.

The best time for your trip

The ideal time to travel to Sardinia is in the summer. As well as being ideal for relaxing on the beach, it is also the best time for excursions in the mountains. If you are planning a visit in August, remember that almost everything is closed on the day of August 15, including the reception of many hotels. Definitely avoid autumn with its violent storms.

How to get around

You can get around Sardinia by train and bus, however a car is the most reliable way to tour. You won't find much traffic on the island, with the exception of August. For the neighbouring islands of Carloforte and La Mandalena you can take the ferry. The smaller islands such as Tavolara, Azinara, Cavoli and the private Mal di Ventre belong to parks and marine protected areas, so for your visit ask for information on a case by case basis.

The weather in Sardinia

The climate in Sardinia is Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers. The hottest month on the island is August with an average temperature of 25°C. January is the coldest month, with an average temperature of 10°C.
Accommodation in Sardinia

Resort Valle dell'Erica. Resort Valle dell'Erica has a private coastline, which is made up of rugged coves and beautiful beaches. The resort consists of two parts: the Hotel Erica and the slightly more charming Hotel La Licciola. Resort Valle's ten restaurants and snack bars cater for all tastes. For a romantic dinner with a sensational 180 degree view over the infinity pool and the sea in the distance, choose the Nautilus Restaurant. If you prefer an à la carte restaurant on the water, book a table at Li Zini Sea-Front Restaurant. The other options include local cuisine, show cooking with the chef making great things happen before your eyes, swimming bars and a pizzeria for the kids. Ask about the organised tours available or visit the golf course for a game of golf with sea views.

Villa Las Tronas Hotel and Spa. The building was once a summer royal residence. Today it invites guests to one of its 24 rooms and suites, as well as a magnificent sea-front pool. Visit the spa and treat yourself to a massage or a facial or body treatment. Take a dip in the indoor pool and get into the rhythm in the Jacuzzi or sauna. The hotel is just a few minutes' walk from Alghero. When in town get a taste of its Catalan past by sampling the local specialty paella algherese.

Boutique Hotel Capo Blu: A small hotel with just 14 suites, it is the epitome of boutique beach style. Here you'll relax in your hanging chair and catch a breath of oxygen thanks to the palm trees shading the pool bar. Walk through the palm forest that hugs the hotel to find yourself on the golden sand beach. If you're not in the mood for the sea, visit the swimming pool or the tennis court.

The walls of Aguero

Hotel Costa Dei Fiori. The infinity pool is immersive and gives you the impression of being on the edge of the endless blue, while its range of suites is perfect for romantic getaways, memorable anniversaries and unique honeymoons. You'll dine by candlelight, spoil your partner with a couples massage and order breakfast in bed. If you miss the activities head out to the tennis court or rent one of the bikes.

Restaurants and bars

Su Gologone: one of Sardinia's most beautiful experience hotels, it's the place to try milk pork, the region's most famous dish. In Su Gologone's restaurant you will get a real taste of the local cuisine, which reflects in its simplicity how the locals approach life. Handmade pasta, delicious cheeses, spit-roasted meats and the traditional Sardinian flatbread, carasau bread baked in a wood-fired oven, all await you in this wonderful restaurant with a pale and teal personality.

Da Renzo. It is particularly famous for its pasta with seafood from the waters of Sardinia. This pasta is made by a company owned by the owner, so if you like it you can buy it for home. Try some of his raw platters, lobster spiny or aragosta. Finish your meal with a tiramisu.

Ristorante Gintilla Cagliari. All the ingredients at Gintilla Cagliari are organic, and the dishes are exquisite in both taste and presentation. Fresh grilled vegetables and homemade pasta marry traditional Sardinian cuisine and are paired with an enviable wine list. Try one of the delicious plant based desserts too. This restaurant is not just a vegetarian's dream, as its menu can seduce anyone who loves good food. The interior design and chic atmosphere enhance the experience for any foodie.
The picturesque San Pantaleo

One of the many marble quarries in Orosei

Caffé Libarium Nostrum: Take in the stunning views as you enjoy a luxurious cocktail at Caffé Libarium Nostrum. You might even fall in love with this place, the way it stands perched on the medieval bastion of Kaliari. Libarium makes the best cocktails in town and accompanies them with its unique sunsets. You can also dine here, so if that's in your plans call early for a reservation.

Hidden Treasures

Strada Panoramica. SP71, also known as Strada Panoramica della Costa del Sud, follows the entire southeastern coastline and offers stunning panoramic views, as its name suggests. The Strada Panoramica passes by several beaches with clear crystal clear waters, so at any time you can stop and dive into the blue and turquoise. Some of the most beautiful spots along the route are the beaches of Cala Piscinni, Tuerredda, Su Guideu, Cipolla and the lighthouse of Capo Spartivento which you can reach through a path from Cala Cipolla.

Tharros. The Phoenicians turned this originally deserted place into a commercial crossroads because of its geographical location. The city of Tharros was completely abandoned in 1070, but today you can visit the archaeological site and the surviving ruins. After Tharros, a walk to Cape San Marco is recommended. Climb up to the tower of San Giovanni to admire the ruins and the surrounding beaches from above.

Bosa: For a colourful excursion visit beautiful Bosa. This small and cute town with buildings and houses in pastel shades, is located next to a cool river. The most beautiful images of Bosa will be captured on the way, a few minutes before you enter the community. After admiring the place from here, go inside and walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuel, the main street with its many restaurants and shops. Walk past Bosa Cathedral and cross the ponte Vecchio, the old bridge that will take you into the old town. In the museum you will find works of art made of embroidery and lace. Visit the magnificent Serravalle Castle, which from its hilltop overlooks the entire town. Inside the castle you will see its famous chapel with ancient frescoes.

Cave in Cala Luna

Cave of Neptune: Near Alghero you will find the Cave of Neptune, part of which is open to the public. In total, the Cave is four kilometres long. In the part you access you will see stalactites, stalagmites and a small island in the centre of its underground lake. The cave can only be visited with a guide, with whom you will tour for 45 minutes. The ferry departure points are in Alghero and at the Porto Conte pier, but you can also go on foot if you walk down the 654 steps carved into the rock. This path is impressive but also tiring, so don't forget that you will have to climb it later.

The main airport

Cagliari-Elmas Airport (Italian: Aeroporto di Cagliari-Elmas) is a regional airport in the Elmas district of Sardinia, near Cagliari.

Cagliari airport opened in 1937 and was refurbished and enlarged in 2003, giving it a capacity of 4 million passengers per year. In 2014, the airport served 3,639,627 passengers. Due to the high expense of ferries linking Sardinia with the mainland, an increasing number of families prefer to fly to Cagliari. As a result, Cagliari Airport has established itself as a major tourism destination in Sardinia.

Tips

The midday siesta is observed in Sardinia. From one to four in the afternoon most shops are closed, and for lunch you can find a restaurant until three. If you miss lunch, you can dine from eight o'clock onwards.

The archipelago of La Maddalena

The most reliable way of getting around is by car, but the roads in Sardinia require concentration and attention. There is no uniformity in the road network and you will find everything from modern motorways to rough dirt roads. Depending on your vehicle and your mood, ask the hotel for information on the roads leading to the places you plan to see. In some cases there are peripheral, well-trodden roads to certain mountains, hills and remote beaches, so choose a longer route for a safer and more relaxing tour.

Much of the travel in and around Sardinia is by ferries, ferryboats, inflatables, sailboats, kiteboards, windsurfers and kayaks. Whatever you choose, keep in mind that there have been many accidents involving people renting their boats without the necessary skills. In addition, boats are available for hire without an attendant or crew, which is even more dangerous if you yourself do not have the necessary skills to drive them on the sea. The best option is a boat with recommended professionals, who will guide you safely and take you to places you wouldn't find on your own.
