Virtual Laser Keyboards – Functioning, Benefits and Disadvantages

by Jag Jenny Online Marketer

Virtual input devices such as keyboards are especially designed to enhance the functionality of other hardware counterparts of the system. This concept is applied to almost every input device which is used for entering data into the computer, whether it is piano or the keyboard. Therefore, virtual keyboards are in great demands nowadays. Although the folks who are accustomed to using conventional hardware may find it difficult to use this type of keyboard nevertheless, they are quite portable and compact once you get familiar with its functioning.

Technology:

These virtual objects are rightfully termed as the keyboards of the future because they are characterized by holographic laser projection of a QWERTY keyboard. When you hit the keys present on the flat surface, you can actually hear the realistic tapping sound and you feel like you are typing on a standard keyboard. The newly launched models combine virtual technology with the laser technology to provide us the best of both worlds.

Virtual laser keyboards include 3 basic modules- the illumination module, the projector module and the sensor module. It produces 2 projections on a flat surface. The projector which is placed in front causes a red holographic laser projection which is actually an invisible form of IR (infrared) projection.

This technology was first invented by the IBM Corporation which holds its patent since 1992. Since then, it has been passed to other companies which have successfully modified its functioning to their maximum benefits.

Functioning:

When you press any key on the keyboard, the IR projection of the key bounces back inside the projector which processes the angle and the letter that has been pressed by the projector. The projector is connected to the main system via a standard USB connector or a Bluetooth.

Advantages:

Some benefits associated with virtual keyboards include the ease of usage and the ability by which it can tempt the users. They are not associated with moving parts and do not require contact with the device. Also, using these accessories makes computing easier and less time taking.

Disadvantages:

The users who use laser keyboards with tablets and other such devices often suffer from ergonomic issues because the device must be kept at the correct angle and the user has to be present in a proper sitting position so that he can type comfortably on the set. To some folks, these keyboards do not provide that comfort which is required for typing. Nevertheless, a majority of folks are happy with this part.
