Videos in Demand Types of Stock Footage to Make You Money

by DANA BATES Publisher

To hold down costs in production of films, many makers will turn to stock footage. With more and more internet sites selling stock footage, the question for the budding videographer is what types of footage are in demand. What category of video are film makers not only looking for, but willing to pay for?

Although each film maker needs specific footage for their project, there are common themes that cross through many genres and have established themselves as money-making footage. Although many of these categories are common sense, some are surprising.

·         Sports. Stock footage of sporting events or sportsmen are popular with many videographers because of the difficulty and expense of getting good stock footage without relying on specialized equipment and going to the expense of attending the sporting event and trying to film it. The high quality sports footage will readily find a buyer in today’s marketplace.

·         Wildlife. Although not as time or money expensive to obtain as sports footage, wildlife footage presents its own unique problems. It is nearly impossible to schedule wildlife filming unless you are using a wildlife handler who brings the animals with him. Using natural footage as opposed to created footage brings a different feel to a film.

·         Nature. In the same way it is hard to film animals unless you are at the right place and time, nature has a way of not cooperating with schedules and shooting desires. By definition, weather is uncontrollable and even though a film maker may be 90% certain that a sunset over the ocean will be clear and gorgeous, there is always that 10% chance that nature won’t cooperate.

·         Festivals. Much of the beauty of festivities is the unmatched spontaneity of the participants. Ignorance of being filmed guarantees the participants will behave more normally and won’t attempt to ‘act’ their roles. That spontaneity is what many film makers are looking for in their projects. After all, if they want to create a festival, they could, it would just cost much, much more than buying stock footage of a similar event.

·         Famous landmarks. Specifically, a fresh look at a landmark or place that everyone has already seen in a film or movie. Being able to get a different shot of many landmarks that are commonly seen can make a bigger impact in a film, but getting that shot can cost more money than many film makers are willing to spend on a view that has been seen hundreds of times before.

These are broad categories because each film maker already has a vision of the kind of footage he is looking for, but for the person trying to sell his video footage or attempting to sell stock photos, making it too specific will remove more buyers than it will add. Stock footage of any popular activities or locations within these categories will be welcome at UltimatStock, the premier stock footage site on the web, and you will find a buyer for your work.
