Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery or VATS Surgery in Gurgaon and Delhi, India

by Dr. Harsh Vardhan Puri Best Thoracic Surgeon in Gurgaon

In earlier days to operate on the lungs and heart, the chest had to be spread open by cutting the skin all along the back and then spreading the ribs apart. This caused a lot of pain to the patients after the surgery. But in the modern era, due to improvements in technology, we can now operate on the chest with small cuts (2-3 cm) and without spreading or cutting the ribs. It leads to a pain free experience and early discharge from the hospital and avoids large scars.

Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery can be done via Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) or Robotic Surgery. VATS is done with small cuts and with the help of special instruments and telescopic video camera. Robotic Surgery is done with the help of a special Surgical Robot. In our hospital, the Da Vinci Si Robotic System is used for chest surgeries, we are one of the very few centres in the country who have this expertise in their surgical armamentarium.

At Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, our team has the largest experience with Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery in India and we continue to progress onto newer platforms.

What is VATS?

VATS stands for Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery. This is a new technology to do operations inside the chest. It is similar to Laparoscopy. In this technique we make small incisions over the side of the chest and use special instruments to operate inside the chest.

Why should I choose VATS?

To operate on the chest, we need to make big cuts and spread the ribs. But using this technique that can be avoided and only few small incisions are used. After the operation the pain associated with surgery is very much reduced compared to open surgery and patients can go home faster.
