Use of safety products in Schools

A school is considered as a second home for children and it is imperative that it is safe and secured abode. The use safety products in schools is a matter of priority as it is the responsibility of school management to take care the students completely. Be it play schools, day care centers, regular schools or activity centers, all the institutions should be equipped with the relevant and required safety products so that any emergency situation can be handled. At times we come across various incidents like a child getting hurt at school due to a finger entrapment injury or a fall against a sharp edge, a fire situation going out of control due to lack of proper safety gadgets like smoke alarms and fire extinguishers in the school. The primary need of such products and equipment in schools is safety and the same cannot and should not be neglected as it may result in serious injuries and accidents. Let’s read about a few safety products that are a must-have for all schools, day cares and play schools.

Fire Extinguishers: An absolute requirement almost everywhere and schools cannot be an exception. Fire extinguisher in of the most essential safety product and should be installed in each corridor of the school building, in all classrooms, activity rooms, auditoriums, staff rooms, reception area and especially the kitchen area. The support staff members should be trained to use these and fire drill and audits should be conducted periodically to ensure that these are working fine.

Smoke Alarms: Smoke alarms also play a very vital role in ensure safety. They detect any kind of smoke and alert all through an alarm. Again a much required safety equipment for all school buildings that should be mounted on all the requisite areas so that the entire building is covered.

Finger Guards: Finger entrapment injuries are quite common amongst small children and it is imperative for classes 1 and below and all the paly schools and day cares to get finger guards and door blocks installed in all doors. Finger guards prevents finger jamming injuries which enables the students to move freely in the room especially the play area. Not much importance is given to this safety product but it is about time that schools should look at getting these installed. Recently there was an incident where a student lost her thumb because of a finger entrapment injury. It should be a must for all day care centers and play schools to install these finger guards.

Corner Guards:  Many walls have sharp edges and corners and small children may get hurt if they fall against it. Corner guards help cover these sharp edges and prevent any such injury. Small children tend to fall more often hence the junior classes should have tis safety equipment installed along with all day cares and play schools.

First-Aid Kits: All schools should have a medical room and proper first -aid kits to cater to emergencies. These first-aid kits should be checked periodically so that all the required medications and tools are available. The sports and activity rooms of the school should contain their own first-aid kids as students tend to get hurt more in such areas. If feasible then all the classrooms should have one basic first-aid each.

CCTV Cameras: It is essential to monitor all the areas of the school including the classroom and CCTV cameras are the best for the same. The school should get adequate cameras installed that would cover all the critical areas like the gates, corridors, classrooms, dispersal and assembly areas and the activity rooms. Live feed should be checked timely and there should be a dedicated team to monitor the same depending upon the size of the school.

These are some essential safety products and equipment that every school should have no matter how small or big it is. Safety should be a priority for all and these tools would assist in securing the students and all the staff members if installed.
