Use of humor in webinar presentations

by Joseph Smith Content Writer

An effective webinar presentation is one which succeeds in engaging the audience from the beginning to the end. There are several techniques to enhance the engagement of a presentation and one of the most tested techniques is the addition of humor in the narrative by the host. Humor is an emotion which enjoys universal appeal. It amuses everyone and has the power of drawing attention instantly. It can create wonders in a web presentation when used correctly.

Advantages of humor in a webinar

1. Likeability

The addition of humor makes the webinar more appealing to the audience. Because the audience is amused and engaged during the session, the webinar takes on a positive connotation in their minds which makes them more susceptible to the key ideas and messages in the webinar. A webinar with a very mundane topic can also be livened up with the use of tasteful humor.

2. Memorability

Often, analogies and anecdotes are used as means to induce humor in a presentation. These oratory tools have great recall power and help making the main webinar subject memorable to the audience. Many seasoned free webinar hosting personnel use relevant and funny stories to keep their audience engaged and increase memorability.

Disadvantage of humor in web presentation

Although humor often succeeds in enhancing the quality of a presentation, it might also end in utter embarrassment. Sometimes, humor may backfire and ruin a presentation. Therefore, the speaker needs to be cautious enough to refrain from any kind of humor which has the slightest chance of being offensive to the audience.

Some tips to follow while adding humor to a presentation

1. The speaker conduct thorough research on the cultural sensibilities of the audience before joking about anything. For instance, self-deprecation is a technique of humor extensively used by a speaker to amuse people in the western world. However, this technique does not appeal and might even be disturbing to an Asian audience,

2. The humor in a presentation needs to sound impromptu. Humor which seems forced and artificial can be annoying for the audience and make your webinar memorable for all the wrong reasons.

3. Remember that an overuse of humor in a presentation may make the webinar come across as shallow and superficial.

4. It is the discretion of the speaker to decide whether he/she will incorporate humor in a web presentation. However, if humor is used, it must be well-rehearsed.

5. Several web hosting services also offer translations of presentations for an overseas audience.  In such a situation, make sure that the jokes used in the presentation do not get lost in translation.
