US Green Card

by Astha Saxena Consultant

Who would not like to shift to the land of billions dreams and fascinations – The USA. A country that has a gigantic consumer economy; and that offers a billion opportunities both in the personal, as well as the professional life, is surely a land to be explored and shifted to, but unfortunately, with the time flowing by, the options of entering this country seem to be shrinking.

Currently, a number of options and pathways are available for the  immigrants – intending to shift to this country; as the American authorities have established an elaborate framework of entry permits – for the people fulfilling certain criteria and parameters, that include temporary and permanent routes. Even though all the entry permit arrangements are popular, popularity of permits that grant permanent residence – Green Card – are specifically sought after.

The Green Card of the United States of America is a much revered title, since the bearers of this status get an opportunity to reside in the country for an indefinite period of time; and also enjoy an unhindered access to opportunities in employment and education. Now, this is something that is incomparable and unimaginable, since the benefits the permanent resident status accompany cannot be achieved any other way.

The people entering the US on Basis of Green Card are free to travel out of and into the country without requiring any special permission – every time return to the country after an overseas travel. Besides this, the recipients of this status are also allowed to include their spouses and children – falling in the predefined age category – in the application.

A US Green Card is similar to the general skilled or business migration programs followed elsewhere – in other countries, like Australia and Canada – across the globe. The people entering even on the basis of the  family or employer sponsorship are not bound by the employment; they can switch over and take up jobs as per their convenience.

The permanent residents, as the name suggests, are free to take up employment with any US employer, except a few strategic locations and in organizations that are considered to be critical for the security of the nation, and are hence offered only to the nationals of the country.  On the top of that, if you – after entering the country, do not wish to take up employment, but wish to start your own business, you are free to do it.  You would not require to obtain any special permission for such a decision.

The family of the Green Card Holders also are accorded a parallel status and they too enjoy the similar privileges that the principal applicant enjoys. The biggest advantage for the people shifting on the basis of a Green Card is that the children of the permanent residents are able to access the best educational facilities anywhere in the country and that also at a very less cost, almost 3 to 4 times less than what a foreign student pays as fees.

The Green Card of the USA also provides protection, to the permit holders, against any future changes in the law of immigration. The people residing in the country, on fulfilling the required parameters and requirements can go ahead with placement of requests for obtaining the citizenship of the country  through the naturalization process.

The much coveted US Green Card can be obtained through the specified routes: family nomination – by either the nationals or the permanent residents; through the employment based visa; and through investment programs.

The process for this visa often has to undergo the two phase procedure; the application is initiated by placing an I-130 application.
