Image Sprains and strains can easily happen and are one of the most common ailments to be presented at the hospital emergency room. When a sprain or strain occurs, the pain can be extremely intense which is why urgent medical care is required when one occurs. Read on to learn the urgent medical care that should be administered in the case of a sprain or strain.

  1. Rest

While you obviously won’t be doing anything too vigorous when you have experienced a sprain or strain, you should ensure that the affected area is rested. Sit down and take it easy is definitely the first thing you should do, as this will quicken the healing process.

  1. Ice

When you sprain or strain a part of your body, the ligaments and tendons may be stretched, inflamed or swollen. To reduce these symptoms, you should apply an ice pack to the affected area as ice has the effect of numbing the pain and reducing the swelling.

  1. Elevation

As you rest with an ice pack on the sprained or strained body part, make sure to keep the affected area in an elevated position as doing this will reduce the level of swelling and discomfort that may be caused.

  1. Visit your doctor

If you are still seeing no respite from the pain of the sprain or strain, you should make an appointment to visit your local medical clinic or your Phoenix Urgent Care center. The doctor will be able to assess your injury and determine whether you need to have an MRI scan or an x-ray.

With any injury, the initial care you receive is the most important but this is especially true in the case of sprains and strains, as they require a particular level of urgent medical care due to the intense level of pain that they can cause.
