Updated player owned ports totem hotspot strategy
The March 25, 2013 Old School RS Gold patch notes included an update to player owned ports. This player owned ports update involved making totem hotspots more useful. RuneScape players can use the following strategies for upgrading totems to better succeed in player owned ports.
There are five possible types of totem that may be built. Identical totems can be built. Bonuses will stack; one totem gives a 4% chance, having two increases that to 7%, three totems of one type gives a 9% chance, and having all four gives a 10% chance.
The five types of totem are Telescope, parrot, cherry tree, pandora's box, and jade statue.
The cherry tree gives an increased amount of port resources per voyage. As port resources are only needed short term and are more or less useless after most pincer level upgrades are complete, the cherry tree is not a long term investment.
Telescope gives an increased chance of receiving a scroll mission. As scroll missions are limited to 80 total, the telescope is a mid range option in terms of duration. RuneScape players should have their rocktail soup, all three body armor, and a good scrimshaw (vampyrism or gem finding unless others are in higher demand) unlocked before disabling the telescopes; having all the armor unlocked would be preferable.
Pandora's box is more or less useless, as random events seem to be capped at one per day. It is possible to not get a random event on a given day and pandora's minimizes the chance of that.
Jade statue increases the chance of receiving trade good missions. As trade goods are one of the main sources of experience as well as the main money making means from player owned ports, RuneScape players should definitely build at least one jade statue if not two.
Parrots increase the chance of receiving experience missions. RuneScape players not 99 in player owned ports skills may consider building this, and experience missions increase in value as port resources are no longer needed and scrolls fill up. Icons can be used to attract more desirable adventurers, and thus sail for skills such as slayer, thieving, prayer, or herb.
If four separate totems are built, RuneScape players gain a 16% chance of bonuses. Two of a kind and two solos grant 15%. Two pairs grant 14%. Three of a kind and a solo grant 13%. Four of a kind grant 10%. Thus, the question to ask is, 'Do I want a smaller chance of a specific bonus or a greater chance split among more than one type of bonus?'
