However, over the time these fingers get filled with all the dirt and debris of the pool water and hence demand a thorough cleaning. A thorough cleaning can include removing the old DE and replacing it with a new.

• Sand filters – this is another category of Hayward swimming pool filters which are cleaned by forcing the pool’s water to flow through a layer of sand which catches the dust particles. Although the sand filters are not capable of trapping particles as small as DE filters, this filter is capable of removing dirt particles that are about twenty to forty microns in size. The major benefit of sand filters is that they can effectively clean pool water for several years without having to change the sand. However, backwashing the filter every few weeks is sufficient for clean pool water.

• Cartridge filters – these are the least expensive Hayward filters and their advantage is that there is no need to add sand or earth to the filtration system. When compared with sand and DE filters in which you either have to backwash the sand or add new earth, these filters demand removing of the cartridges from the filter and then hose it off. Once it gets cleaned, it is ready to be installed and used back again for filtration.
