Understanding the Inteior Design Client Brief
by Krina Shah WriterWhen you sign an agreement with the client, what
happens next? You meet and discuss the client brief. This includes all
important details about an interior design project: goals, budget, and timeline.
It is the core idea on which you design a space. If you have doubts, make sure
you clear them during the meeting. A slight misunderstanding can cost you an
entire project. Here are the most important questions to ask when decoding a
client brief.
What is the project vision?
The client’s vision becomes your goal. Every client
has an idea of how they want to renovate their space. Understand their vision. This
could be as small as redesigning a washroom. Certain clients are more specific.
They provide details about what patterns and paint colours they want. Some
build a space around a theme.
For example, the theme can be nature. You need to
create a space that makes the washroom a place that is close to nature.
Whatever the vision, ensure it is followed.
What are the resources in hand?
Check the resources you have in hand to execute the
project. Today, clients are willing to spend lakhs of rupees to create a space
they wish to create. Once the client has given you a budget to follow, start
planning. Allocate funds for every activity like buying raw materials,
furniture, and home décor. Keep an account of your spending. Many interior design courses include budgeting as a part of the curriculum.
Always set aside a budget for emergency purposes. While
shifting, some items may break or go missing. You can utilise the saved funds
during such times.
Who leads the project?
As an interior designer, you have numerous aspects to check.
You cannot do them all by yourself; if you do, you run out of time. Some tasks require
higher experience. For example, designing the kitchen needs more precision and
spatial awareness. You can tie up with a partner specialising in kitchen
design. Similarly, assign tasks to co-workers based on their skills. Brief them
about the project well.
What is the timeline?
Mark your calendar based on the completion date. Be
realistic when setting the timeline. Do not overpromise and underdeliver. You
may be working on many projects alongside. However, for the client, it is the
only dream house. Draw inspiration from communication design. Line up things that need to be done on priority.
Communicate and keep the client updated about the
progress always. Have a buffer time when planning out a project. Keep backup
options handy.
