What is alcohol addiction?

Alcoholism is characterized by uncontrolled consumption and preoccupation with alcohol. Alcohol Addiction basically means the inability to control drinking habits and causing emotional and mental dependence on alcohol. This uncontrollable urge to drink causes various health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, cancer, digestive problems, etc.



Symptoms of alcohol addiction

1. Tolerance: alcohol results in diminished tolerance in a person due to repetitive use of the drug. The person becomes highly dependent on alcohol and it dangerously affects their health and can kill them at last.

2. Withdrawal symptoms: Withdrawal means the process of reducing or cutting back on an addictive substance like alcohol. An addict usually feels various physical and mental effects during withdrawals like sweating, shaking, tremors, hallucination, anxiety, insomnia, etc. 

Effects of alcoholism

Alcohol consumption causes various effects on the physical and mental health of the addict. There are both short-term and long-term effects.

1. Short-term effects:

• Accidents, injuries, falls caused due to alcohol while driving or doing anything can cause head injuries, fractures and sudden deaths too due to stroke.
• Violent behaviour and being victim of violence.
• Reckless drinking and inviting a greater risk of accidents and injuries.
• Can cause nausea, falling unconscious, seizures, etc.

2. Long-term effects:

• Heart diseases
• Weaken immune system causing vulnerability to infections.
• Weaken bones cause a greater risk of fractures.
• Paralysis and stroke
• Mouth, bowel, or, liver cancer
• Liver dysfunction, liver failure, jaundice, etc.
• Sexual problems
• Problems within relationships and families.
• Anxiety, stress, depression, and may suffer exhaustion.
• Aggression and domestic abuse.
• Psychosis, delusion, and suspicious behaviour.
