by Prerna Mehta Classes of Professional Studies

Like every government exam, IELTS examination also holds a reputation for being tough. The fear of scoring low is different for different people. Therefore, many IELTS aspirants trust IELTS institute in Delhi to eliminate these questions:

  • Will I get the desired score in the first attempt?
  • Can I get a higher band?
  • How to prepare the writing part?
  • What kind of questions comes in the listening part?

And so on…

Different people have different IELTS needs, some need IELTS score to apply to a university while others need it to apply to work. Let us discuss some of the fears that hold you back to clear your IELTS and suggest some ways to overcome them.

Listening Module

Fear #1: What if you skip some parts of the audio?

Listening section of IELTS demands concentration and checks your ability to catch the right meaning. This section can only be mastered if you focus hard until the audio stops. This is where most of the IELTS candidates face problems. If you are not focussed while the tape plays, you will run out of time and you won’t be able to answer the question based on the audio. Moreover, your next question will also get affected if you don’t follow the time frame.

Solution: Work on your weak points by practising more listening tests. Get it checked with your IELTS trainer or if you are training on your own, then analyse which areas you are lacking in. Attempt that test again with more attention and consciousness. Be positive and confident while attempting your IELTS exam. If you worry too much about skipping the important audio part, you may end up ruining your exam. You can always jot down the important bits from the audio. Remember to be quick!

Reading Module

Fear #2: What if you are unable to complete the reading section in time?

The time limit of the reading section is 60 minutes. The whole reading and answering part is to be done in these 60 minutes only. Completing the whole section with a better understanding of the text is a challenge for almost every student. From the beginning of the reading section, this concern will be there in your mind and haunt you till the last minute.

Solution: This is the moment where your time management skills will come in handy. There will be three passages and you have to dedicate each section with a certain time frame. Ensure that you complete each section in that time frame only otherwise the whole practice will go in vain.

Strengthen your reading skills by attempting tests regularly. Read newspapers, books, etc. If you get stuck at a particular question then don’t ponder upon it for long and move on to the next one.

Writing Module

Fear #3: What if you can’t find any ideas for essay writing?

This is the major issue for most of the student. As we leave behind the school and college days, we leave writing habits behind too. Gone are the days when we used to write big essays and enjoy researching about the topic. Thus, when you encounter an essay question in your test, it is okay to get nervous.

Solution: If you want to crack the writing section in IELTS then preparation and practice should be the two important things on your mind. Read different types of essays to gather ideas for your masterpiece. Moreover, write out your ideas or thoughts in a simpler way. Complex words and phrases are only going to confuse you. Write accurately not descriptively as the examiners will judge you on your expressing capabilities.

Speaking Module

Fear #4: What if you go blank in the speaking part?

This can happen to anyone, especially to those who are appearing for the first time. Many people who are not in a habit of engaging in conversations, may go blank or search for content or just stammer while speaking. Some people think that they may speak irrelevantly or commit grammatical errors.

Solution: Whether it is about the lack of content or problem of hesitation or fear of speaking, practice is the only solution. The best way to prepare for this section is to record your audio while speaking on a cue card at home. Analyse your weak spots later on and work till perfection. This practice will help you gain confidence, stability and make you enough attentive that you won’t hesitate during your test.
