Ugadi 2017 - Welcome Telugu New Year with Great Zeal
According to Hindu calendar, the first day of the Chaitra month is
called Ugadi or Yugadi or Telugu New Year, which is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in
Maharashtra. This is an important day for the people of Telangana, Andhra
Pradesh and Karnataka. In Sanskrit the word Yugadi means Yuga (Age) + Adi (Starting)
- the beginning of a new age. Ugadi festival gives a reason for celebration to
the people of Andhra Pradesh.
When is Ugadi in 2017:
According to western calendar, generally Ugadi is celebrated in the month of March or April. This is the starting of the spring season, where people can see the signified changes in the season. Chaitra navratri or Vasant navratri begins on the same day, in which people worship the nine goddess. Genrally, this festival falls in the month of March or April. This festival is known by the different names in different states of India, like in Maharasha known as Gudi Padwa, check what is the name of this festival in Karnataka, Manipur, Punjab and Kashmir region.
Uagdi is the time for a get together in the family in which people
celebrate the Ugadi festival. People started the preparation of Ugadi
celebration before one week in advance. It is celebrated with great zeal and
fun by following all the rituals. On this day, people decorate the home with
fresh flowers and tie the mango leaves at the entrance of the gate. On the day
of Ugadi, people wakeup early in the morning, take bath and wear new cloths.
During Ugadi day, people prepared a traditional and special dish called
Ugadi Pachadi. This dish is prepared by using seasonal ingredients like mango,
jaggery, neem, tamarind, chilli and salt. These ingredients signify the
different flavours of life sadness, surprise, anger, happiness, fear and
bitterness. This Ugadi Pachadi is kept in an earthen pot near the God idol. After
this, puja is observed at the home and people take the Ugadi Pachadi as Prasad.
During this time, in different states special dish like “Ugadi Pachadi” is
prepared at home. Preparation of special dish is not only a traditional ritual
but it has scientific reason too. This dish helps in gaining better immune
system.
Elder people in the family or priest recite the Panchangam of the New Year
where they tell the prediction of the year according to moon sign. People get
the blessings from the elder ones for a happy new year ahead. This festival
signifies the growth & prosperity and a good time to start new ventures.
After the puja and Prasad, people wish each other in their family a
“Happy Ugadi”. People give the gifts to relatives and friends on the special
occasion of Ugadi and wish for their bright future and happiness. Many people
