Uber Partners and Drivers: Intro to the Different Uber Services

by Peter Will Consulting Experienced

What is Uber?

Uber is a global transportation and ride-share firm currently with its headquarters in San Francisco. In 2009, the company started out as an everyday business and has grown to a global company in a little over 7 years.  You will agree with me that for any invention or newly generated business concept to win its fight against the status-quo, it needs to have identified some holes which it intends to fill. Over the years, the concept of problem-solving has become a basis for the drive towards the revolution of the world we have now. This is why when Uber came up with answers to the lingering questions of transport passengers; it became impossible to limit the extent of her growth. The world of transportation practically owes the mighty shift it experienced to the advent of Uber.

The Problem Statement

In the earlier years, people around the world had grown used to standing on the streets for sometimes very long hours – waiting to find a taxi-driver who would pay attention enough to stop. When the problem of stopping the cab is solved, then you go on to dealing with the problem of negotiation (in countries without taximeters).  The time wasted while waiting and the high and sometimes unpredictable rates the taxi companies charge were and still are a constant source of irritation to a lot of passengers. In some cities, the number of available taxis is relatively low (restricted sometimes by artificial government caps through Taxi Medallions).

The Uber Solution

When potential Uber partners and drivers ask if I can guess how Uber came to be as big as it is, I simply say that the company saw a problem and solved it. Uber acknowledged the weight of the problem that transportation hiccups common across most major cities in the globe. So, Travis Kalanick and Garret Camp put heads together and found a way to use technology to solve a global problem.  Within a flash, ordering a ride, which used to be a tug of war, soon became a single click away. With the development of the Uber mobile app, a user who has signed up can just order a ride, and also monitor the movement of the driver who’s coming to pick them. This story changed the entire transportation industry. The possibility of booking a cab by tapping a smartphone brought about a revolution in the taxi industry and the value it added to the life of many made it very popular in no time.

How Uber Did It Limited Cost of Production

The fact that Uber decided to hire drivers as individual partners and not as employees is an amazing way of avoiding a very large maintenance cost that might come with managing thousands of cars (Uber black car: Uber started with this high end service, before diversifying its offerings). It also gives Uber the opportunity to wisely maximize profits by focusing largely as a dispatcher of rides across the globe.

Quality Research

Uber never at any point jumped into any city without understanding the demographics of that particular market. The proof you find is that some of the requirements to become a driver in some cities are different. Most times, the required driver ages are set differently based on the unique requirements/laws of each city. Also, there are times where new services are introduced in a select number of cities. All these decisions are based on the deductions made from sufficient research and demographic examination.

Coordinated Expansion

The company wasted no time from inception. They launched in a new city every month starting from May 2011. Such consistency and willingness to put their services out to a larger range of customers is what has, over the years, helped the growth of the Business.

Uber Services

Uber provides a wide range of services. The three primary Uber services are UberX, UberXL and Uber BLACK.
