Types of Supplements That Can Benefit Your Family

by Rayanne M. Writer

The health supplement market has grown to a massive $122 billion industry in the U.S. alone, according to research by the Council for Responsible Nutrition. This has resulted in improved overall quality of life through more holistic nutritional diets and natural treatment alternatives for certain illnesses. But the growing space also creates one issue - too many options being put on shelves. It can be exhausting to research each supplement type and compare multiple brands. To help you narrow down your options, here are six types of supplements that can benefit your family.

Multivitamins

Theoretically speaking, people should be able to obtain all of their nutritional requirements from their regular diet. But modern society has evolved to rely greatly on processed foods that are cheaper and quicker to manufacture and buy. Conventional crop agricultural practices rely heavily on chemicals and processes that get rid of most of the commodity's nutrition. That is why a multivitamin supplement that contains essential nutrients, such as vitamin A, C, and E, is important.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba supplements are derived from a plant of the same name that originates from China. The leaves and seeds of the plant are traditionally used to create medicine, but modern sciences are mainly interested in the ginkgo extract that is taken from the plant's leaves. Ginkgo biloba supplements are claimed to improve brain function and blood circulation. Its main components are flavonoids and terpenoids, both potent antioxidants that help fight free radicals in the body. Ginkgo biloba supplements are also favored for its work in improving blood flow throughout the body. This improved circulation means better health for your vital organs, including kidneys, lungs, liver, and brain.

Probiotics

Not all bacteria is bad; gut bacteria is actually good for your family. The high amount of antimicrobials and antibiotics in today's soaps and cleaners have stripped the digestive tract of any beneficial bacteria that keeps gut health balanced. Probiotics promote gut health, which consequently improves your immune system and digestion. If anyone in the family is having bowel problems or constantly gets a cold or flu, adding probiotics to your diet can help remedy the situation.

Amino Acids

Amino acid supplements should be introduced to your diet with caution. Branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, in particular, are the most common form of amino acid supplements in the market. It is naturally obtained from poultry and dairy products as well as legumes. BCAA supplements can help people with poor brain function directly resulting from liver disease. It can also help family members who are suffering from mania and mobility disorders, such as Tardive Dyskinesia.

Fish Oil

Your heart pumps blood to every body part and system, thus keeping it healthy is vital. Fish oil is loaded with omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation, increase immunity from other diseases, and can even improve your mood. There is an abundance of reports showing the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil in your diet, including lower blood pressure and lower risk of blood clotting and stroke. When buying fish oil supplements, keep in mind that products have varying amounts of actual fish oil content. For instance, some products claiming to have 1000 milligrams of fish oil might actually only have half of it. The other half might be filler content, such as fish guts and bones. Read the bottle's fine print or go online and add the words "EPA + DHA" to the supplement brand to see exactly how much fish oil is in the supplement.

Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the best natural anti-inflammatory agents out there. This yellow-colored spice is a common ingredient in many middle eastern dishes. Compared with other spices, like Basil or Black Pepper, however, few people know how to integrate the unique flavors of turmeric into their diet. This is why the spice and its inherent health benefits are underutilized in most households. Turmeric supplements are a great alternative to take advantage of its anti-inflammatory benefits, including a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and arthritis.

There is nothing more important than making sure your family is healthy. And while regular exercise and a holistic diet can help you achieve this ultimate goal, they can only provide so much in terms of nutrition. Taking the right combination of supplements not only improves your overall health but can also improve your family's cognitive faculties.
