Types of Sensitive Teeth

Many of us say we have sensitive teeth, or at least are able to define the feeling of pain and discomfort we feel in specific situations regarding our teeth. The sensitivity may be caused by:

  • Drinking or eating cold food
  • Drinking or eating hot foods
  • Eating sugary foods
  • Tooth contact with other teeth or tongue

Types of sensitive teeth

There are two types of tooth sensitivity:

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the dentin of the tooth or middle layer is exposed. Typically, the dentin is covered by an outer layer called enamel above the gum line. Within each dentinal tubule is a branch of the nerve that exits the pulp nerve (the center of the tooth). Therefore, when the dentin is exposed, cold, heat and pressure can affect these branches of the nerve and cause sensitivity.
