Types of Sealant You Can Use for Marble Stone

by Philip Smith Inbound Marketing Manager

Marble is the most expensive flooring material. There are different varieties of marble available in the market, and all of them should be sealed or resealed every year.

Sealant application is an essential routine, as it enhances the look of the stone and increases its durability apart from adding to shine and water-resistance of the stone.

No matter how much care you ensure for your marble flooring, you cannot avoid spills. Apparently, spills of red wine, soda, soap, oil, fruit juices, tomato pulp, etc. can cause permanent staining on your marble flooring – if sealant has not been applied on its surface. Sealing eases the cleaning and maintenance process, indeed.

But which sealant is right for my marble stone flooring?

There are basically three types of sealants you can use on your marble floor. These are –

Topical Sealant –

As the name may suggest, this type of sealant is applied on top of the stone surface. It is made from natural wax in general. However, some topical marble sealers are made from acrylics and polyurethanes.

The issue with these sealers is that, they get damaged easily. Though, they provide adequate protection against staining and increase the shine of the stone surface. Another problem is they change their color and start making your stone feel dull.

So, it may not be a good choice for heavy traffic areas and white marble surfaces.

Penetrating Sealant –

If you want to increase the water-resistance on your marble flooring, you should use penetrating sealant then. It penetrates into the pores of stone and hardens. Because of that, they last longer than topical sealers.

The sealant is made from siliconates, siloxanes, and fluoro-polymers.

Impregnating Sealant –

Impregnating sealant reaches deeper into the stone surface, fills the pores with its molecules, and creates a stronger shield against fluids and other types of pollutants.

This sealant contains silanes and sometimes, modified silanes.
