Types of DC Power Systems and Power Supplies

by Ricky Brwon Integration Control Systems
In a number of situations and processes, there is a requirement of controlled electric energy and this is the reason why power supply has become such an important part of test equipments. There are several definitions of power supply and the most common example could be of a combustion engine, but this definition is not limited till here. This definition also includes the name of DC power systems or power supplies and this is what we will be discussing here in this post. However, the first thing to know about these direct current power supplies is that they are broadly used for processes like development, maintenance, measurement, testing, etc.

Constant Voltage/Current

•   In terms of the power supply, constant voltage/current is known for providing constant voltage or supply of constant current and this is actually the most popular variety of DC power systems.
•   An important point to know here is that when operating in the constant current mode, these power supplies mainly maintain a set current.
•   This continues to happen even if there is a change in the resistance and this happens to be one of the main features of this kind of supply.
•   Other than this, in this version, you will find a whole plethora of features like there is remote sensing, then there is master/slave connection and next up, you will find analogue programming too.
•   Most importantly, this analogue programming feature comes integrated with remote programming terminals and this is yet another feature that sets this version apart from all others.

Multiple Outputs

•   According to the suppliers of DC chargers, the next name that we discuss here in this post is given the name of multiple output and this kind of power supply actually has two or three outputs.
•   Experts say that this version could be an ideal option for you if you often use multiple voltages while testing.
•   At the same time, this could also be a cost-effective choice and this is a really robust reason behind the immense popularity of this version.
•   At the time of researching about this type, you will find that several users opt for a triple-output power supply and the reason they cite is that it offers one output for digital logic.
•   However, a thing to remember here in this context is that the very same version an also be used as it has the capability to provide two outputs for bipolar analogue circuitry.
•   Just like the version discussed above, this version too has some unmatched features and some of them are –
•   Timed Operation
•   Settable Voltage Limitations
•   Storage Registers For Up To Fifty Instrument States
•   Ability To Connect Two Channels In Parallel Or Series For Higher Current Or Voltage

Programmable

•   According to the sellers of DC UPS, the biggest feature is that in most cases, it is used in the context of computers and computer operated systems and components attached to it.
•   Because of this, it can be a perfect pick for tasks like production and testing and it is because of this reason that this version gets its name, "programmable power supply".
•   An important fact to know is that it has been in use by a number of computer interfaces in the past and two of them have been really popular.
•   The names are IEEE-488, or GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus), and RS-232 serial communications and this is followed closely by Ethernet and USB interfaces that have also been quite common.
