But what is plastic surgery?
Well, plastic surgery refers to any type of
surgery performed to restructure or alter the form or characteristics of a body
part.
There are two types of plastic surgery:
Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
- Reconstructive surgery: It is a treatment used to improve
dysfunctional body parts. While it may also change the individual’s
appearance, it is initiated primarily to restore function and the
appearance is not in the consideration.
- Cosmetic surgery. It is for an individual who wants to change
the physical appearance of a feature of their body. Although in many cases
there is nothing wrong with their physical appearance, they may still want
to change it, like alter the size of their breasts or the shape of the nose.
A person may also use cosmetic surgery to change mutilated body parts and
give them a more normal appearance, like scar removal.
Surgeries for breasts fall under both
cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries.
BREAST AUGMENTATION
Over time, women’s breasts can lose their
form. This commonly occurs after life events such as pregnancy or weight loss,
and even age.
When breasts appear less full, misshapen or
lopsided, a person’s self-esteem and confidence can be affected. Breast
augmentation, sometimes breast enlargement, is an option to make breasts look
more shapely and youthful. It can also be a reconstructive option after a
mastectomy.
Mastectomy is the process in which the
surgeon removes the breast tissue either due to or in the prevention of breast
cancer.
Implants used in breast augmentation
It performed by surgically inserting implants
to improve breast symmetry and appearance. Implants can be either saline or
silicone.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants are silicone discs filled
with silicone gel. They’re filled prior to the surgery and implanted. The
benefit of silicone is that it feels more like real breast tissue.
A downside to silicone implants is if they
rupture, there is a greater risk for more extensive intervention. Since
silicone isn’t a natural substance, the body doesn’t readily absorb it. No real
health issues are linked with a ruptured silicone implant. But the silicone can
leak out around the implant and into the breast, eventually altering the shape.
Once it ruptures, a silicone implant also
doesn’t just deflate. When this happens, it’s known as a silent rupture.
Silicone implants also usually cost more than saline. You must be at least 22
years old to get them.
Gummy Bear Silicone Implants are also
available for a more natural looking breast augmentation.
Saline Implants
The exterior of the saline implant is
composed of silicone. But it’s filled with sterilized salt water. When a woman
opts for saline implants, the disc will be implanted empty. Then, once it’s in
place, it will be filled to the desired size.
If a saline implant ruptures, it will
deflate, and the salt water will simply be absorbed into your body. However,
additional surgery will be needed to remove the ruptured disc, and a new one
can be inserted. You must be at least 18 years old if you’re looking at
getting saline implants.
BREAST REDUCTION
When breasts are disproportionately large for
your body size, their size and weight can cause physical difficulties such as
the neck, back or even shoulder pain.
Breast reduction surgery is performed more
often to relieve the physical difficulties associated with very large breasts.
Women are the most common recipients of the surgery. But even men with
abnormally large breasts, gynecomastia, may also be candidates for breast
reduction surgery.
What is Breast Reduction
procedure?
During a typical breast reduction surgery, an
incision is made around the nipple and extended inferiorly. Different
techniques may be used based on your breasts and desired outcome. From there,
breast tissue, the extra skin, and fat will be removed. This usually results in
the whole breast being raised into a smaller and more youthful shape.
BREAST LIFT
Over time, weight changes, breastfeeding, and
age can cause the breast to become droopy and lifeless, and this can cause
significant issues with confidence. If this applies to you, a breast lift might
be in order. The procedure may also come into play after the removal of an
implant.
What Is a Breast Lift Procedure?
During a typical breast lift surgery, the
surgeon moves the areola and nipple to a higher, and more appropriate
anatomical position, on the chest, and remove any extra skin or breast tissue.
This results in breasts appearing more youthful.
In some cases, a patient may also opt for
implants while undergoing breast lift surgery to further enhance the breast’s
appearance.
Breast lifts aren’t permanent due to the fact
that it will naturally be affected by gravity. Touch-up procedures may be
necessary to maintain the desired appearance as you age. Another breast lift
may not be necessary. But this will depend on your unique needs.
