Types Of Brazing Fluxes & Their Uses

During the brazing process of joining two or more metals together by flowing or melting a filler metal in between, it is common for oxides to be formed. To prevent the formation of oxides while heating the metal in brazing, brazing fluxes are used. When the metals are being joined in an inert or reducing environment, no oxidation takes place. However, if brazing is performed in a natural environment, it is imperative to use brazing flux to prevent oxidation. In addition to that, fluxes also wipe out any chances of contamination on the brazing surface. These fluxes can be available in different forms like liquid, paste, powder or paste with filler metal powder. ·    White Brazing Flux
This is one of the most commonly used brazing fluxes. These fluxes are easily visible during the brazing process while heating. White brazing fluxes are usually made using a combination of potassium salts of fluorine and boron and have excellent heat and water resistance properties.

·    Black Brazing Flux
Black brazing fluxes are favored over other fluxes as they offer 5-% to 100% more protection even when exposed to high temperature. They are usually formulated using the right balance of antioxidants and other chemical reactants and performing chemical reactions between them.

·    Bronze Brazing Flux
Bronze or brass brazing fluxes are known for their easy residue removal property. They are usually used when joining elements like carbides, copper alloys, carbon and galvanized steel etc. These fluxes also have excellent visibility when being brazed as they leave no sodium glare. They are usually used in automobile industries, home appliances, cycle manufacturing industries, furniture industries, tool manufacturing industries etc.

·    Aluminium Brazing Flux
Aluminium brazing fluxes showcase high fluidity which lets them express a high fluxing activity.  These fluxes are used for brazing all the different types of aluminium and its alloys as well. This flux has the quality of eliminating any porosity and strengthens the joints when used in brazing. These fluxes are usually available in powder form and can be used in air conditioning, furniture, radiators, window frames, auto parts, repair of components etc.

·    Aluminium Bronze Brazing Flux
Aluminium bronze brazing flux, as the name suggests, is used to prevent the formation of oxides while heating of aluminium, bronze and other alloys based on copper but with 2% to 10% of aluminium in it. This is a highly reactive flux in the form of a paste that does not take much time to dissolve aluminium oxides. These aluminium bronze brazing fluxes have excellent cleaning property that enables them to offer controlled and low-temperature brazing of metals.
