Try to Build up a Smoker Out of a Refrigerator
Smokers are just not the basic cooking device but they also smoke your food with different flavors. While providing space and ventilation to generate smoke by adding wood chips and heat in controlled portion, the basic idea of a smoke is to have two areas in the smoker. The first and foremost, is one where heat and smoke are created to do the cooking while the other one holds the food in a controlled temperature.

This way, you can have all the taste of a smoked food and save some money as well. There are many people who want to have smoked food at home but are unaware of the concept of building smoker at home. For building a smoker, you don’t need to worry about anything. You can simply make a smoker out of a refrigerator. Take out your grandma’s refrigerator which was entirely made up of metal. However, these days, refrigerator is coming in the plastic body from inside. It is ideal for cold smoking where the temperature never reaches above 90oF. But, it is certainly for good for building hot smokers where the temperature is needed around 225oF.
Take an old refrigerator with a metal body and clean it thoroughly from inside. Make a hole about 8”diameter in the bottom, 1”diameter above it; place a horizontal metal plate as a baffle to let disperse the smoke. Keep one thing in mind that if the refrigerator has the machinery underneath the storage compartment, then starts building a smoker only after removing the motor and compressor. Now, try to utilize this space for a making smoke with a hot plate and a bowl of hardwood flavored chips. If the refrigerators’ bottom section is removable repeat the same the process.
For maximum capacity, elevate the refrigerator on four concrete blocks, and make a hole in the bottom and set the smoke apparatus outside the refrigerator. Now, build an enclosure of plywood, concrete blocks or metal around the smoke source, so that the smoke cannot go outside the refrigerator but to force the smoke to be in the refrigerator only. The next step is to make one hole of 3” or two 2” holes in the top of the refrigerator and arrange something of pivot metal flaps, bricks to control the temperature of the vents. A smoke pistol is used to smoke up your food items in this smoker. It comes in many flavors that are available in the market.
