Bodo Tribe
Bodo tribe is one of the popular and largest tribe in Assam. The people of this tribe come from various other parts of the world. This tribe is indulged in various activities including rice cultivation, poultry farming, tea plantation, and silkworm rearing in the North Eastern parts of India. The tribe is purely non-vegetarian and rice is considered as their staple food. They also have a traditional drink which is also known as Bodos is Zu Mai (rice wine). Silkworm and weaving are some other part of Bodo culture. The Bodos are also expert in making beautiful crafts from bamboo.
Kuki Tribe
Kuki tribe can be found in all over the North Eastern states. They usually prefer living at the hill tops. They use their own language to communicate i.e. Kuki language. The people of this tribe are involved in cultivation of dwarf cotton and spun yarns. Kuki men wear colorful Sangkhol, a jacket and a ‘Pheichawm’ (short dhoti) whereas the women wear a nih-san underneath a pon've or a wraparound. This dress is worn above the chest along with various ornaments including earrings, bangles, necklace, bracelets, rings etc. People of this tribe enjoy smoking. They also prefer cross-cousin marriage. They celebrate Mimkuut Festival in the month of January.
Adi Tribe
Adi Tribe is divided into two diverse categories known as Bogums and Bomis. Both these tribes are further divided into various small sub tribes. The dress for women and men are naturally weaved. Men wear helmets made from cane, bear and deer skin, depending on the region whereas the old women usually prefer wearing the necklaces and spiral earrings. They are also fond of tattooing their hands, arms and face. They are found in Arunachal Pradesh. They prefer living on the hill top.
Nishi Tribe
Nishi Tribe is originated from the Indo-Mongoloid stock and they inhabited in the region of Arunachal Pradesh. They have a different tribal language from other tribes. They speak Tibeto-Burman language. They have diverse hairstyles in which people can see the use of Tibetan thread along with the plate. They also wear rings made up of cane around the waist, arms and legs. The men of the tribe wear sleeveless shirts made from thick cotton whereas the women wear sleeveless mantle of striped or plain cloth. The upper part is tucked tightly over the chest and a ribbon tied at the waist. They also wear include colorful bead necklaces, brass chains, metal bells, silver earrings and heavy bracelets of various metals.
Rengma Tribe
Rengma tribe are generally found at both Nagaland and Assam. The community is further divided into two categories - Eastern and Western Rengma’s. The population is more than 50,000 in entire Nagaland. They are expert terrace cultivators. The men of the community wear Rhikho – it is a white cloth with four narrow black bands and the number of black bands. They are popular for making yellow dye from the flowers of a tree. They also practice painting on cloths. So, the tribes of North East India enable the vacationers to know a lot about the unique culture, tradition and their livelihood.
