Traveling is one of the best ways to boost satisfaction and happiness, destress, connect with other people, and learn more about your surroundings. However, it’s not uncommon to hear people talking about their poor travel experiences after making one or more mistakes, or after doing little to maximize their experiences. Lucky for you, I have a few tips and tricks that you and your family can take advantage of to have that happy, satisfying and safe travel experience you’ve been dreaming of this year!

Pack wisely

In some cases, the difference between a successful trip and an unsuccessful one is how you pack. It’s true that the best way to pack is to focus on making the luggage light. However light packing does not mean sacrificing comfort or style; however, it does require you to reconsider some travel basics, such as shoes and your suitcase. The best way to approach packing is starting with a light foundation. Get a featherweight suitcase for everyone, preferably one under 10 pounds. It should have enough pockets and compartments to help everyone stay organized.

Secondly, when selecting the clothes to pack, always go for the lighter fabrics. Materials like heavyweight fleece and wool are great, but they also tend to be heavy and bulky. Silk, polyester, nylon and other similar fabrics are ideal because they’re lightweight. If you’re planning on visiting a resort, for instance, you can focus your shopping on resort wear for women and men.

When choosing shoes, you should go for lighter options, such as ballet flats and sandals, and a pair or two of multi-purpose shoes. Nonetheless, your choice here will depend mainly on the activities you’ll undertake during your trip.

Practice some useful habits to stick to your budget

When you travel, you’ll always be tempted to spend more than you planned. To be on the safe side, you need to practice a few useful habits to help you stay within your budget to avoid financial inconveniences and regrets. Some of the things you can do to achieve that goal include the following:

Set a realistic daily travel budget

Track your daily spending with a good budget app

Cut back on alcohol

Prepare your own meals

Make each and every splurge count

Try getting your accommodation close to a university

If your travel destination has a university, then try to look for accommodation near it. Areas near universities are great because they have cheap and tasty restaurants, they’re generally safe, and they usually have many small supermarkets. Moreover, the hawkers or touts don’t usually like such areas, as they prefer being close to the more well-off tourists in other spots.

Avoid jet lag by adjusting your sleep schedule

If your travel destination requires a long international flight, one of the things that may scare you is the jet lag, particularly if you usually experience ugly jet lag effects. The good news is that you can reduce or avoid the effects by making meticulous flight preparations. According to Mayo Clinic, one of the best ways to prevent jet lag is by adjusting your sleep schedule and getting enough sleep before leaving.

A few days before the flight, adjust your sleep schedule gently to match the time zone you’re going to. Ideally, your goal should be to force your body to go to sleep earlier or later, depending on your destination’s time zone. On the flight, your family members can drink a lot of water and try to operate according to the new time zone. Also, make sure you arrive early and get enough rest to give your bodies enough time to adjust.

Always get a local guide

Local guides are great ways of learning about your travel destination. Besides that, however, they can be a small but valuable window into the regular life in that city, region or country you’re planning on visiting. Having a local guide can help you have a unique experience, as they usually have answers to many questions you’re likely to have as a tourist. Moreover, a local guide can be a great excuse to build rapport with a local, and get many answers and interesting insights from a credible source.

Conclusion

If you’re planning to travel with your family this year, you can use these tips and tricks to increase your chances of having a great experience. Many of them will prove useful particularly if you’re on a tight budget.
