Travel dog crates and training your pet to spend time in them

by Joseph Smith Content Writer
Road trips are fun and quick getaways from your daily life. If you go on them regularly and leave your dog behind, your dog might feel depressed or unhappy which in turn can also lead to physical problems. Why not take your dog with you? After all, you can easily take your dog with you on your road trip with the help of dog carriers. Training your dog to be comfortable inside it is not troublesome at all if you follow these simple and doable tips.

Make it inviting

Dogs love spending time in a place where they can do new things or simply unwind or take a nap. As long as your dog can do the about inside the travel dog crate, it will be easy to get him/her accustomed to it. So you have to make it inviting for your pet. Leaving treats is the easiest option, but giving your dog treats very often is not very healthy. What you can do instead is buy a new toy and use that to lure your dog in. Not only will the dog be engaged for hours with the game, it will also get accustomed to the crate.

Extend the amount of time

Initially your dog should not be left in the dog crate for extended periods of time. A good way to increase the duration they spend inside the crate is to personally sit near the crate when your dog is inside. Dogs love to spend time with their owners and this will make them believe that being inside the crate will make them spend time with you.

Crate them when away

With time, start moving away from the crate. Leave your dog to play or nap in the crate while you work in the kitchen or watch television in the other room. This will get your dog familiar with spending time alone in the travel dog crate. It won’t be possible during your trip to be around your pet while it is in the crate anyway. So you might as well get is used to being by itself. When doing this, it is a good idea to leave a treat or two behind.

Take them out on small rides

If it is a road trip that the travel dog crate is going to be used for, it is also advisable that you get your pet accustomed to being in the car. Whenever you go to run an errand or two, ask your pet to get inside the carrier and then place it in the car. Not only will this train the dog but it will also get you accustomed to the routine of placing the carrier and taking it out of the car.
