Transformers And Their Different Types - A Detailed Analysis

by Amrita Shindal Professional Writer

Power or electricity plays an important role in our day-to-day lives; without electricity, our existence is almost void. A majority of our household appliances run on electric current. Due to voltage changes or fluctuations, we may face a lot of power problems. Trhe solution to all these problems lies in a transformer. Transformers or power transformers are electrical devices that are used for converting an alternating current voltage from a particular electric circuit to the next, using electromagnetic induction. These set ups are used in different machines for lowering the inbound voltage or amplifying the voltage of electronic gadgets. These power transformers have a couple of windings on a laminated iron slab. As for the number of windings, it basically depends on the amount of electric voltage that the mechanism is used to deliver.

Transformers are extensively used in places where electrical power needs to be transmitted from one circuit to the next. They essentially convert energy between low and high voltages, changing impedance and providing insulation between circuits. Nevertheless, most of us don’t think much about their functioning process; nor are we aware of the different types available in the market. Different situations call for different kinds of transformers.

The most common types of transformers are - electrical transformer, low voltage and high voltage transformer, current transformer and step-up transformers. Each of these varieties has its individual characteristics and usages in transmitting voltage; this again depends on the kind of gadget it’s attached with. Here, in this article, we’ll focus on the three main types – current transformer, electric transformer and high voltage transformer.

Current Transformer

The main reason behind using this transformer is to receive current from the secondary circuit; it determines the alternating current through the conductor. These transformers transmit current with affecting other actions and transfers current directly.

Electric Transformer

This type of transformer is basically used for transferring current from a particular circuit to the next, using electromagnetic induction. These transformers transmit current quickly and effectively. They’re available at reasonable prices in the market.

High voltage transformer

The high voltage transformers of today can be used for multiple applications and they have some standard characteristics. Generally, they find their usage in power transmission applications. Basically, they transfer the energy from one circuit to the next, using fine voltages.
