by Jessica Kappor Project Manager

For registering your business in Dubai, it is important to get trade license from the concerned authorities. The Department of Economic Development (DED) issues this license that defines all the business activities your company can carry out across UAE.

To start a business in Dubai, it is important to have a trade license. However, the requirements for the license can vary depending on the category of the business. For instance, health services, financial services, printing and publishing & food trading require more clearances than a general trading business.

What is a Dubai trade license?

Prior to setting up the business, the company needs to obtain the trade license Dubai, which is perhaps the most important permission document. This license is issued by the Department of Economic Development (DED) and defines all the activities that can be carried out across the UAE.

There are basically 3 categories of licenses issued for registering a company in Dubai. Depending on the nature of business, one of these license categories will be issued:

1. Commercial License – It is issued to a company that will engage in any kind of trading activity.

2. Industrial License – This trade license in Dubai is issued if the company is involved in manufacturing or any industrial activity.

3. Professional License – This category of license is issued to service providers, professionals, craftsmen and artisans.

DED, Dubai is the statutory body responsible for handling licensing procedures for any business entity in Dubai with the official support from the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

However, some categories of business require license approval from certain ministries and authorities. For instance, insurance companies and related agencies need to have an approval from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, banks and financial institutions from the Central Bank of the UAE, companies involved in pharmaceutical and medical products from the Ministry of Health and manufacturing entities from the Ministry of Finance and Industry. Businesses engaged in oil or gas production and related industries need to undergo detailed licensing procedures.

Moreover, all commercial and industrial businesses in UAE must be listed with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Dubai company register: Requirements for obtaining trade license

Before establishing any business in Dubai, it is important to meet the legal requirements of all the concerned government authorities. The business entity must produce documentation proving it has obtained the legal permits to operate locally. Moreover, the requirements vary based on the nature of business activity you will be involved in.

· List the category in which the business falls - commercial, industrial or professional.

· Submit an application to DED for initial approval.

· Register a trade name after receiving initial approval (If you haven’t reserved a trade name previously).

· Lease business premises and get approval from the concerned authority.

· Get all the necessary documents; such as memoranda of association along with approvals from concerned government authorities.

· Pay the required fees.

These special requirements must be contented only then the company can proceed with business establishment and operations.

Once obtained, the trade license Dubai is valid for one year. For renewal, the business entity must get an approval from the concerned authorities. This approval document should be submitted along with the copy of the previous license.
