According to research, the average person is supposed to get 6 – 8 hours’ sleep every night. However this isn’t always the case, and most struggle to get 6 hours sleep, let alone 8! Not getting the right amount of sleep can mean lack of productivity and functionality, and can even cause long term health problems such as weight gain. So what can we do to make sure we get the right amount of sleep daily?

TIP 1 - Don’t eat a big meal just before you go to bed, especially when it is laden with carb heavy foods. This will put your digestive system into over drive whilst you sleep.

TIP 2 - Avoid drinks that contain a lot of caffeine and sugar in them at least 4 hours before you go to sleep. Drinks like coffee, tea and fizzy drinks will spike your sugar levels, making you restless.

TIP 3 - Having the right bed and mattress makes a huge difference to how we sleep. Some people love the comfort of the memory foam mattress, whilst I personally like the pocket collection mattress. It provides comfort whilst not being too soft that you sink into it. I purchased my mattress from Diana beds where they also sold single beds with storage to suit my tastes.

TIP 4 - Try and get yourself into a good sleep routine. Research has shown that people who get into bed and wind down for 1-2hrs before going to bed will have a better sleep than those who don’t.

TIP 5 – Try and avoid using gadgets in your bedroom – too much information will keep your mind active, and it will take longer to fall asleep.

TIP 6 - Make sure all areas of natural light are blacked out, so that you won’t struggle to get to sleep, and you won’t be woken up early.

TIP 7 - Try sleeping on your side. Research professionals have shown this is great for those who suffer from Insomnia.

TIP 8 – Exercise is great for helping the muscles to relax. However don’t exercise less than 3 hours before bed, otherwise the adrenalin will keep you awake.
