Generally, Fiji is known for its adventurous and romantic places. But that is not the case (There is a reason I start the sentence with generally!). Fiji is very rich in cultural and historical values as well. There are many destinations which shows the cultural well being of Fijians.

In this post, we have enlisted some of the best historical and cultural destination in Fiji that will blow your brains out (Not literally!!!!). The places are awesome and the history of the place is fabulous.

People usually do not visit Fiji for the historical value however it is known to be very rich in culture. The people are religious and hardworking. Their traditions seem to be funky and cool. However, the values of those traditions are as deep as cool it looks. Let’s get started with the historical places you must visit when you are on a vacation in Fiji.

Here you go,

The Historical Port Town, Levuka

Situated in the sixth largest island of Fiji, Ovalau, Levuka is the former capital of Fiji. It is the largest establishment (out of 24 establishments in Ovalau) on the island of Ovalau. According to Fiji historians, The Europeans and Americans develop this town as the epicentre of building warehouses, commercial activities, and other business and residence activities.

In spite of the majority of the inhabitants (or you can say native Fijians), Levuka was peacefully handed over to Britishers by the King of Fiji in 1874. Even after that, Levuka was resided by native peoples outnumbering the Europeans.

Europeans helped the natives in development of the place with traditional buildings as well. Levuka was listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. You must visit this city if you want to see an amalgamation of European structure with traditional local Fiji infrastructure.

Hot Springs, Savusavu

You can find ample of hot springs in Fiji. But this hot springs in Savusavu got some really interesting historical story. According to Fiji local historians, in ancient times local people use the springs when it raised up to 90 degree Celsius in temperature, to boil their food. In the 19th century, the locals told the Europeans that this spring is here as long as they remember (There is no historical timeline for these hot springs which makes them more interesting).

In 1898, a botanist H.B Guppy studied the geothermal activity of these geysers which turned into springs. It was like a fountain of at least 12-18 meters height. All the bursts have lasted for 10-20 minutes. The silent period was almost identical. This geyser activity runs around for two months.

Isn’t that interesting? When you go for a Family vacation in Fiji, you must visit these hot springs in Savusavu.

Naag Mandir Temple, Labasa

Labasa is the largest town in Vanua Levu. There is a temple with a sacred cobra rock which is commonly known as the ‘snake temple’. The rock is believed to be growing several centimetres in a year. Right now it is about 3-meter high rock. The roof of the temple is raised four times since the 1950's.

According to locals, this rock can cure all the sick and infertile humans. Most of the Hinduism followers worship this scared growing cobra stone. They offer flowers, tinsel garlands, coconut cream, and fire lamp at its base. If you like sacred things, There is nothing better you can find. Visit the Naag Mandir in Labasa. It is worth visiting.
