Top Career Advice for Those That Qualify as a Millenial
by Sarah Williams Blogger, writerLooking for career advice since you're just starting out?
Check out these great pieces of career advice if you've finished school and now
need a job.
There are a million think pieces out
there on millennials in the workplace. Most of them are disparaging of a
changing world. Millennials are killing industries, they're changing job norms,
they're shaking things up.
Why? Most millennial workers are
just trying to get a foothold in today's difficult economy and job
market.
The gig economy environment and changing the technological landscape has made it
difficult for many millennials to start their work careers on the right foot.
Many who are just starting out feel lost or feel as if they're wasting their
twenties.
If you feel that way, don't lose
your head. Read on and we'll walk you through a few career advice tips that
might set you back on the right path.
1.
Don't Settle For A Passionless Job
Many young workers feel
disillusioned with their work situations. Many feel stuck and unsure whether
they should leave a job they are unhappy at or stick around in order to
maintain stability.
The real truth of the matter is, if
you aren't enjoying your job, you should feel no guilt in leaving. If you
dislike your job, your performance will suffer.
Even if you think you can pull
yourself together for work every day, your lack of passion and excitement for
the work will eventually shine through. The job will eventually wear you down,
and you will have done all that sticking around for nothing.
When you have a job you're
passionate about, it gives you a reason to jump out of bed and rush to work.
You can integrate the work alongside your personal goals and be excited to
grow. There is work and positions out there that you can be passionate about,
you just need to find them.
For example, this blog
can walk you through a passionate day-in-the-life of a nurse. Even though the
work is hard, it's a genuine passion that can see us through day after day.
2.
Take Risks Early and Often
Everything can feel very high stakes
when you're in your twenties. You're hanging on by a thread financially, and
expectations from family and former classmates are high. You don't want to make
a wrong move.
But making a wrong move is exactly
what you should be doing. Your twenties is a great time to take risks because
it gives you time to bounce back without ruining the rest of your life.
Taking risks puts us in new
situations. It provides us new opportunities to learn, make mistakes, and grow.
If we repeat the same motions over and over on each new day, it's likely
nothing will change and we won't advance.
The most successful people in all
industries are risk takers. The management at your career will likely
appreciate that you're willing to put it all on the line to make things
happen.
You should still be smart about
which risks you take and when you embark upon them. But a risk-taking attitude
can be essential to get ahead in today's crowded marketplace.
3.
Focus On Relationships
Hard work is important. But at the
end of the day, most businesses are run off something much more amorphous —
relationships. Who you make a connection within your twenties can pay off in a huge way years and
years later.
You never know where your co-workers
or that friendly stranger at the bar might end up fifteen years from now. Maybe
they'll be running the most important company in your industry. You just never
know.
That's why it's important to keep a
forward facing attitude and remember to pick your head up from your phone and
computer. The work must be done, sure. But any opportunity that you're not
meeting and connecting with others is a failure of your work and social
life.
Being a social butterfly is also
never a bad thing in the eyes of a company. They're still hiring a human being
after all, and it's important that you have the social skills needed to put
people at ease.
4.
Find Mentor Figures
It can be hard to go at your career
feeling like you're blind to the future. It's hard to attack problems when
you're alone and have no one to refer to that understands. That's why it's so
important to have mentor figures that can advise you and set you on the right
path.
A proper mentor should be someone
who stands in for an ideal future you. If there's someone a good five, ten, or
even fifteen years ahead of you on your chosen career path, this is a
person worth having a relationship with.
This mentor should be able to tell
you about their experiences and guide you to follow their path. They can help
you avoid time-consuming mistakes and help gear your attitude towards success.
They can even help you solve
problems or manage issues when they arise in your career.
Many young workers make the mistake
of looking straight to the top of the totem pole when looking for a mentor.
These people are probably far too busy and have far too many people asking for
their help already.
But picking someone who's a few key
career steps ahead of you can be perfect. These people are probably happy and
willing to help someone that reminds them of themselves.
