Maharashtra is the business and financial capital of India. It is also called as City of Dreams. It draws a number of tourists every year from different aspects. Some of them are business related and others travellers.

Mumbai offers many structures of heritage and it is linked up with history.  In this article you will get to know about World Heritage Sites in Maharashtra.

1. Ajanta Caves

These caves are found in Maharashtra. These caves were used by Buddhist monks to get shelter during rainy season. They used simple tools and built numerous monasteries, sculptures and paintings inside these caves. There are totally 31 temples built in 2 BC and also in 200 AD. These are examples of classic Indian art and many paintings describe the life of Buddha.

2. Ellora Caves

These caves are also found in Maharashtra. They are built between 600 AD and 1000 AD. They are rock cut monuments which includes temples of Hindu, Jains and Buddhists. There are numerous sculptures and monuments inside each cave. There are 34 temples in these caves. Usually Ajanta and Ellora caves are used in combination in terms of tourist itineraries but, they both are entirely different styles of monuments built at different ages.

3. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is the popular railway station in Mumbai and also known as Victoria Terminus. It is an historic railway station and listed in World Heritage Site. It is designed by Frederick William Stevens and consists with Indian Mughal Traditional Architecture.

4. Prabalgad Fort

Prabalgad Fort lies in between Matheran and Panvel in the western ghats of Maharashtra at the height of 2,300 feet. This fort was built for a queen named Kalavantin. It is a perfect tourist destination for those who loves trekking and wants some adventure.

5. Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves are rock cut architecture and located on Elephanta Island. It is declared as a World Heritage Site because it belongs to 600 AD. It has the sculptures of Gods worshipped by Hindu and shows the excellent art of artistic of a bygone era. It is also considered as Seven Wonders of the World and remains closed on Monday. The easiest way to reach by a ferry from Gateway of India.


These heritage sites are not enough to explore the Mumbai and Maharashtra as there are lots of places to visit like Beaches, Wildlife, Temples, Street Food, Bollywood Studio etc..
