UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - 2, 50,000 Kilometers

 

The United States of America (USA) is the largest and longest railway network of the World. United States of America with railway network operating route length is around 2, 50,000kilometers.

That’s why the US railway network is called the biggest in all over the world. Freight train lines are around 80% of the USA’s total railway network, but the total passenger network spreads about 35,000km.

The USA freight services railway network is around 538 railroads which are mainly operated by private organizations and operators. The Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway are the largest freight railroad networks in the whole World.

The national passenger rail network, which is called Amtrak, has more than 30 train routes and it is connecting 500 destinations in 46 American states.

There is a plan of US railway to build 27,000 Kilometers of  national high speed rail system which will be completing by 2030.Then the construction of the California high speed rail which is the country's first high-speed rail project.

Another, three more high-speed projects which includes the Midwest high-speed rail line which is connecting Chicago with Indianapolis or St. Louis, Texas high-speed rail, and the Northeast High-Speed Corridor rail projects are in the process.

 

 

CHINA – 1, 00,000 Kilometers

 

China's railway network, covering with the length of over 100,000km. This railway network is ranked as the second biggest and longest railway network of the whole world. The extensive railway network, which is at present operated by state-owned China Railway Corporation, is having 2.08 billion passengers (It is the second highest after Indian Railways) and 3.22 billion tons of freight (It is the second highest after the US railway network).

China railway is the main means of transport network in China. China’s rail network of over 90,000km of conventional rail routes and it is approximately 10,000km of high-speed railway lines. The total rail network of China is trying to exceed 270,000km by 2050.

News of the day is the rapid expansion of China's high-speed rail network in some years, has put China the largest in the world. Around 2,298Kilometers of Beijing-Guangzhou is the World’s longest railway network and the govt. of China is estimating to reach 50,000 Kilometers by the year 2020.

 

RUSSIA – 85,500 Kilometers

Russia's total railway network is operated by state-owned Russian Railways, runs for over 85,500km. In the year 2013, the network of Russian Railway had carried 1.08 billion passengers and 1.2 billion tons of freight. It is the third highest freight carrying after the US and China.

The Russian railway network has 12 main lines, out of which it provide direct connections to the European and Asian national railway systems of different countries like Finland, France, Germany, Poland, China, Mongolia and North Korea. The Trans-Siberian Railway (Moscow-Vladivostok line), spreading the length of around 9,289Kilometers, which is the longest and one of the all time busiest railway lines in the world.

Russian Railways has introduced the Sapsan high-speed rail service between St. Petersburg and Moscow in the year 2009, but it was not successful due to sharing of existing railway lines with low-speed train operations. A high-speed railway line between the two cities has been again proposed with investment of $35bn. Russian Railways have projected to have 2,500Kilometers of high-speed railway track between Moscow and Kiev, Minsk and Kursk.

 

 

INDIA – 65,000 Kilometers

The Indian Railway has nationwide rail networks, it is the fourth largest and longest in the world. This railway is wholly owned and operated by state-owned Indian Railways and Indian rail is operating in length of more than 65,000Kilometers rail lines. Indian rail has carried about eight billion passengers (It is the highest in the world) and 1.01 million of tones of freight (The fourth highest in the world).

The Indian railway network is divided by 17 zones of administration and daily operation of trains by the Indian Railway is more than 19,000 trains and 12,000 passenger trains and 7,000 freight trains, are also included. It is proposed that the Indian railway has the plan to add 4,000km of new lines by the year 2017 and also it is proposed for more gauge conversion. There is plan of India Railway has plans to add 3,338Kilometers of exclusive freight network by 2017 with implementation of Eastern & Western Dedicated Freight Corridors(DFC). This two are out of six identified dedicated freight corridors of India.

Six high-speed rail networks have also been finalized for implementation in the country. Around 534Kilometers of rail line between Mumbai and Ahmadabad high speed link is going to introduce a pilot project with an estimated investment of $9.65bn.

 

 

CANADA- 48,000 kILOMETERS

Canada's 48,000Kilometers of railway network has given the national network in the fifth position in terms of 5th longest rail network in the World.

Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) are the two major freight railway networks are operating in Canada. Canada Railway is operated in 12,500Kilometers intercity passenger rail service network. Algoma Central Railway and Ontario Northland Railway are smaller railways providers and both are providing passenger services to some of rural areas in the Canada.

Three Canadian cities - Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver – have good connections of extensive commuter train systems. In addition to this, the Rocky Mountaineer and Royal Canadian Pacific offer luxury rail tours to watch the scenic beauty of certain mountainous areas in Canada.

Canada has not any single high-speed line on its railway network. But many high-speed rail lines such as Toronto-Montreal, Calgary-Edmonton and Montreal-Boston are under the plans of govt. but not yet proceeded for preliminary studies or survey for further stages of development.
