Here are 10 Washing Machine Maintenance Tips

Here are some washing machine maintenance tips that will surely help you to take care of your machine better.

1. Clear the Fabric & Detergent Softener Dispensers Regularly

All Automatic washing machines now have a separate container for detergent and fabric softener. These machines automatically mix both these substances with water and pour them straight into the tub. This is generally a clean process as we do not have to wait for the detergent to mix in the water and then put all our clothes. However, prolonged use of these containers while not cleaning them properly makes them a safe haven for bacteria and concentrated toxic elements. It applies a transparent and sometimes green texture which feels grimy to touch. Imagine our clothes being washed in a mixture of such harmful bacteria build-up. This will contaminate your machine and clothes while affecting the quality of cleaning as well. To take care of such issues, you should clean the dispensers regularly.

2. Maintain the Product Finish

Brand new and clean home appliances enhance the appearance of your home. However, a worn-out washing machine usually does not look appealing and may even spoil the look of the room or the house. Some of us ignore this aspect while not caring to clean the outside or top of the machine. Front-loading washing machines are the ones that suffer usually, their basic top surface makes them a magnet for dust and grimy stuff that keeps gathering on them. People tend to forget that despite being heavy pieces of equipment, washing machines are delicate in nature and require proper care, both in terms of their working abilities and the way they look. The tricks to keep the machine looking brand new are simple. Clean the top and sides of your machine with a glass cleaner like “Clinol” so that it does not damage or tarnish the finish. Maintaining the factory finish is the ideal way you can maintain your machine to look clean and shining for a long time. Also, we need to keep the machine covered when not in use and not put any heavy materials on top of it. This will prevent it from scratches and abrasions.

3. Frequently Clear your Filter

Semi-automatic washing machines generally have a lint filter inside the washing tub. Such a filter extracts the lint and other kinds of dirt particles from the washing process and collects it inside a bag. We have to clean this filter as well once in a while too. The reason being once the filter is full, it will not be able to collect the debris which will continue to pile up in the water. This debris will get caught up on your clothes and build up inside the machine as well. This will hamper the total life of your machine and negatively impact its performance. In some of the extreme cases, it can considerably damage the pulsator or agitator as well. Ideally, you should clean your machine’s filter at least once a month.

4. Use It Carefully

The washing machine you own or plan to buy may have a high washing capacity and a very powerful motor but consider it still to be a delicate piece of equipment. It needs careful operation and proper care each time you use it. Please do not stuff your clothes into the machine. Stuffing in more than the suggested amount of clothes means that the machine won’t be able to rotate properly which in turn will impact the circular movement of the drum. This will lead to you having partially cleaned clothes. To add to that it can also damage the motor of your machine as well.

5. Cleanse the Rubber Gasket of your Machine

This is a vital part of your washing machine which suffers a lot of wear and tear. The rubber gasket wraps around the edges of the washer-dryer and protects your clothes from any damage and your hands from any of the sharp edges. Both front-load or a top-load machine, gather some amount of micro dust particles enter it every time we open the door. These dust particles generally gather on the edges and sides of the gasket.
The detergent and softener components and particles also leave residues on the gasket. Being located outside the tub, it generally suffers from frequent spills but remains untidy as we tend to ignore it completely. This is why we should regularly clean the rubber gasket with a moist cloth. Ideally, doing it once a week should be enough.

6. Test and Select the Perfect Detergent

The perfect washing machine detergent usually depends on your budget and specific washing needs. Some of us prefer to use certain machine-specific detergents while others use regular off the counter detergents. The main point to consider is that the detergent you use or choose must not be very harsh or heavily alkaline in nature, as this will damage both the machine parts as well as your clothes. So, test and choose the right washing detergent for your machine.

7. Keep a Check on the Hoses

For a smooth and consistent flow of water both inwards and outwards of your machine, we should keep an eye on the hoses of the washing machine. Both semi-automatic and automatic washing machines generally have two to three hoses of which two are inlets and one is an outlet. We need to make sure the inlets are properly connected to the water source and have no cracks or leaks in them. This will prevent wastage & spillage of water as well. In addition, make sure to check the condition of the outlet or drain hose from time to time. Since it carries out all the dirty water, lint and micro fabric-particles which are often build up in the drain filter and block the pipe. If you face such an issue, try to unblock it or completely replace the drainpipe with a new one.

8. Keep the Door Open at Regular Intervals after Wash

Do not shut the door of your washing machine immediately after using it. This is one of the major mistakes that most people make while using the washing machine. They usually tend to think to keep the door open will build up dirt and dust inside the machine. This is true to some extent but this does not mean we need to close it immediately. Leaving the door open for just 15 to 30 minutes removes the moisture and prevents mould and other such harmful bacteria to build up in your machine. This also helps in drying up the tub and to protect delicate parts from any damage caused by the moisture. An ideal way to ensure the inside of your machine has no moisture is to wipe it off with a thick dry cloth/towel 15-30 minutes after the wash has ended and the leftover moisture has dried to an extent.

9. Give your Machine a Deep Cleaning

People expect their washing machines to give 100% each and every time. However, this is generally not the case. Due to wear and tear and mechanical issues the performance of the washing machine may deteriorate. You may start noticing that your clothes are not coming out as clean as they used to when the machine was brand new. The primary reason behind this is the scaling which occurs due to the micro-residuals present in the water. This can be a major issue in locations that have hard water.
Our Washings machines at Truvison go through rigorous testing which helps us to maintain the consistency in the performance for a longer duration as compared to other brands. Our Galaxy (8.5Kg) & Terminator (7.5 Kg) washing machines are made accordingly.
That being said, we should deep clean your machine from time to time as a part of its maintenance. Use a strong machine cleaner that is capable of removing all the scaling without hampering the metal and plastic parts of the appliance. This does not necessarily mean that you need to buy the most expensive machine cleaner in the market but does not buy the cheapest one as well!

10. Protect your Machine from Spillage

Washing machines tend to gather residues from detergent & softener spillage. Despite our efforts to use the best detergents or softeners in the market, their residues end up becoming sticky & grimy over time and start to smell foul. The ideal way to clean this sticky residue is to wipe it down with a mild dishwashing cleaner. Also, do not forget to clean the insides of the drum with a moist cloth as it also builds up lint, detergent and dirt residue over the period of time.
