The nominations have just been announced for America’s top theatrical awards, the Tonys, which garland plays and performances on the Broadway stage. There was one production that not only got more nominations than any other, but the most nominations a single show has ever received in the 70-year history of the Tonys.

Hamilton, the tale of Alexander Hamilton, the least well-known of America’s Founding Fathers, played out as a hip hop musical, received a record-breaking 16 nods. A UK production of one of the most surprising hits of recent times is currently in the works under the aegis of uber-producer Cameron Macintosh and will arrive in the West End in the latter half of 2017.

The sceptical among us may not believe that a song and dance show charting the tumultuous life (troubled by a sex scandal and ending in a duel) of a friend of George Washington’s will be a hit on these shores, but the stratospheric success of the musical stateside cannot be downplayed. Plus Macintosh rarely backs a loser.

Hamilton’s 16 nods puts it one ahead of its two closest rivals, The Producers and Billy Elliot, which both got 15 Tony nominations in their respective years (2001 and 2009).
