Tips to extend the Lithium Ion Battery Life

by Rohit Singh Mora Batteries

A Lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery used for mobile electronic equipment and electric vehicles. They have a high energy density, low self- discharge.

Lithium-ion cells come in various shape like a cylindrical shape or a prismatic shape that is either they are square or rectangular. Many batteries like in mobiles come with single cells. They cause little harm when disposed of. It has low maintenance and requires no partial discharge.

The main disadvantage is its fragility. It requires a protection circuit for safe operations. At high temperatures, batteries might explode causing serious damage. As they are energetic they get hot very easily and burn the organic solvent inside the cell to ignite and the entire cell burst into flames.

Aging is also a concern as the battery starts losing its capacity after a year even without using it. So do not keep the lithium-ion batteries unused thinking they have a prolonged life. When you buy a battery, always buy near the manufactured date because if you buy six months after the manufactured date, you have less battery life to use.

Cost of Lithium-ion batteries is 40% more than nickel-cadmium batteries. So for the batteries to last longer you have to maintain certain precautions.

How to increase the life of a Battery?

The Lithium-ion battery life can be extended by following these methods:

  • Keep the battery at room or lower temperature as temperature plays a big role in a batteries life as it suffers stress at high temperatures and does not charge you’re mobile in a car if the exterior temperature is high. Lithium-ion batteries give good charging performance at a cooler temperature.
  • Do not charge the battery to full capacity allow partial discharge and after charging the battery to full charge for some days allows it to discharge to the cut-off point and charge again.
  • Do not fully discharge a lithium-ion battery as its chemistry allows only a partial discharge to deep discharge, and if you fully discharge it is the end of its life.

Lithium-ion Batteries in India

Many companies have planned the production of lithium-ion batteries because of the demand for green vehicles. The lithium battery manufacturers import the cells as the local cells manufactured in India are costlier. There is a huge opportunity for batteries in India as the demand is going to surge in the coming years as there is an urgent need to reduce pollution.

The lithium-ion cell manufacturers in Delhi are increasing their capacity as there is an expected increase in demand for the cells. Though the rates are at a slightly higher side, due to their good quality there is still for their products.

The Lithium battery manufacturers in India have tied with many foreign companies to manufacture batteries for the green vehicles in India. Two of India’s major car producers have shown interest to manufacture batteries for their own e-vehicles.

There are many positives in Lithium-ion batteries and as there is a wide chance for improvement and because of the advantages of using these batteries they are going to be the future.
