Essentially, an online back-up program does not use a hardware, such as an external hard drive or hard disk, to back-up your files. It uses remote technology, such as a cloud, to store your back-up files in a server separate from your hard drive.

There are two major types of online back-up programs, one serves individual consumers such as DropBox, or Google Drive, while the other one caters to bigger and more complex end users, such as corporations and enterprise.

For individual private users
As more and more people demand access to files any time, any where, from any device, there is been a surge of online storages. These online storages allow the users to access and upload files from various devices, any time and any where.
Private individuals that wish to use an online back-up program can do so easily, There are various online back-up sites that users can access to store their files. There are programs that allow for immediate remote back-up, such as the iCloud. There are also programs that require manual uploading of files, such as DropBox, wherein the user has to manually select and upload data. These programs serve as remote back-up storage for users.
There are also programs that offer online back-up for a fee. They allow you to have bigger storage and possibly have more security features.

The steps to use online storages and back-up systems are very simple. Firstly, the user registers in the site.  Then just as he or she would do to an actual external hard drive, the user can no proceed to create folders and upload files accordingly. You can also access these files to download or delete them when needed.  These also allow for automatic synching of files from a computer or device.
A remote, online, or managed backup service, sometimes marketed as cloud backup or backup-as-a-service, is a service that provides users with a system for the backup, storage, and recovery of computer files. Online backup providers are companies that provide this type of service to end-users (or clients). Such backup services are considered a form of cloud computing.

For corporate users
For enterprises, online back-up systems have to be more secured. There are various suppliers that companies can check out to see which one can offer cost effective rates for storage and back-up.
These back-up systems have to be configured around the existing system of the client, as these can vary from company to company. Given the highly confidential nature of the data coming from these companies, the data to be stored has to be compressed and encrypted, as a form of protection. The data will then be transferred to the service provider's servers.

The back-up process can also be scheduled regularly. It could be on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, depending on the volume and nature of the data.
The process of backing up will also vary depending on the service provider and the stated need of the company. Want to know more? Follow these 6 tips on data loss prevention on the gazellehost blog...
