Tips on storing and keeping your dog food fresh

by Ashish Rohra Ashish Rohra - WRITER

When we spend a premium amount on something like pet food, it becomes quite imperative to store it and keep it fresh and well for a good amount of time. The first and the most basic thing to keep in check is the manufacturing and the expiration date on it. However, there are different kinds of dog food available in the market and there are various ways to store them.

1)      DRY FOOD:

Manufacturers usually spend a lot of time researching about how to keep the dry food for senior dogs fresh and how to increase its shelf life and one of the best ways to follow up on that especially while considering dry dog food is to store it in its original packaging itself, which keeps it comparatively fresh for a long time. However, we must seal the package tightly and properly.

Another way to increase its shelf life is to store it in an airtight container and keep it a cool dry place, away from light.

While buying in bulk, there is always a thought that how can one keep all of it fresh and safe for a long time, for that purpose itself we should go for big, opaque, airtight boxes in which we can empty the entire bulk packet which would not only help in keeping the food fresh for a long time but also protect from the rodents and insects.

2)      CANNED FOOD:

When buying canned food in bulk, the thing to keep in mind is that the most unopened cans have a shelf life of 2-5 years if kept safely and properly, but this also depends on the ingredients and the canning methods that are used for it.

Canned Dog foods would not last longer if stored in plastic tubs as compared to ones stored in the original cans.

Always keep a close eye on the dates mentioned on the cans, .i.e. the expiration date (use by).

Try to use the previously ought cans before the recent ones.

One could even get a can organizer for their pantry and should shuffle the cans and keep the older ones in the front so that it’s easier to use them first.

Once the can have been opened and it’s obviously not possible to use all of it at once, we can store the unused portion in a small airtight container or can even go for a can lid and refrigerate the same for at least 4-5 days depending upon the ingredients in it.

3)      DEHYDRATED OR FREEZE DRIED FOODS:

When we talk about freeze-dried or frozen foods, we should always keep in mind that their shelf life is comparatively shorter than other kinds of dog foods. As soon as we open it, the clock is ticking and it should be consumed as quickly as possible.

Such foods are highly dependent on antioxidants and their biggest enemy is moisture, so always try to store it in a cool, dry place where there is less risk of molds and bacterias.

If we don't repack this kind of food immediately, it is almost next to impossible to use it anywhere more than 6 months

However, repackaging it is quite easy, just store it in an airtight box away from light and in a cool dry place and you are good to go for at least 2-5 years.
