Tips from Top Legal Recruiters for Landing an Interview

by Tonya Callison Author

Landing your dream job doesn’t have to be a far-off dream. If you are looking for ways to improve your chances of getting an interview, here are top tips from legal recruiters that can help. Go over every single one to see which options suit you. With advice from hiring experts, you have a better chance of getting the job you want.

Research the Firms Carefully

Don’t walk into an interview—whether it’s in person or through a video call—without knowing anything about the company. Let them know you took the time to learn more about their background and history in the industry. That tells them you are interested, which is always a good sign in a prospective applicant.

Work with an Agency

It’s not always easy to find job ads and posts. If you’re scouring for work but know that you deserve that foot in the door, look for a legal recruitment agency. Reaching out to an agency can help you find the position and company that’s right for your skillset, salary expectations, and workplace environment.

Be Enthusiastic

Energy matters. If you get accepted into a legal firm, you’ll need to work with teams and clients. What kind of energy do you have? Enthusiasm shows interest. That can make a difference when future employers are trying to decide between you and another new hire. Show them you’re invested.

Fix Your Resume

The best companies hire top talent based on their skills and not always because of their resumes. But that doesn't mean you can neglect yours. It’s still the first thing companies learn about you. You should take extra care with your resume. It may not be the most important thing when they hire you, but it still matters. Eliminate errors in the text, too, since that detracts from the value of your copy.

Give Specific Examples

Hiring interviews can be nerve-wracking. Some companies ask weird, psychology-related questions to gauge how you react or respond and think on your feet. Most companies ask awkward questions or probe for gaps in your employment. They want to know you. They want to know why they should choose you. If you’re not used to marketing yourself or promoting your skills, you’ll find this experience stressful. To prepare, make sure you give specific examples to their questions. Read interview questions in advance to get an idea of what they will ask during the session. Once you know, you can think about your answers in advance. Don’t practice them too much, just enough to know what to say or what point you want to make. That will help you create an excellent first impression.

Cast a Wide Net

There’s plenty of fish in the sea. It can be scary to try and look for a job. The long rounds of interviews and seemingly endless process of sending your resumes can be discouraging. But keep at it. Casting a wide net gives you plenty more chances of finding a job that best fits you.
