Are you planning to pursue electrical and electronic engineering research once your course is completed? Well, research related to electrical and electronic engineering has a lot of benefits; who knows, you might be able to discover something revolutionary during the research, something that changes the lives of people. Several colleges in Singapore which have electrical and electronic programs offer excellent research opportunities and facilities; these colleges provide valuable guidance to those who want to pursue research. However, as far as engineering research is concerned, you will have to be very careful about the topic you choose. Students are often confused about their research topics but it is imperative that the topic is chosen well because you will have to work on the topic for quite a long time.

Electronic and electrical engineering research, like every other engineering research is a multi-step process and there is no one way to go about it. There are many stages and you will often find yourself going back to previous stages as you go along and want to refine the topic. Here are a few steps involved in carrying out engineering researches -

  • The most important part of undertaking an engineering research is deciding on the topic. While choosing a topic for your research :

1. Choose a topic you are genuinely interested in

2. Do not choose a topic very similar to what your fellow researchers have chosen

3. Try to opt for a topic that has at least some published information. Doing your research on a topic with no published material as such can be very difficult

4. Understand that you need to be flexible. It might so happen, that a few days into your research you realize that the topic has to be modified somewhat. Be open to these modifications and changes

5. Talk to your research guide who will provide valuable assistance

  • Once you have decided on your research topic, you will have to start looking for background information on it. The background information you find on the topic will help you to get some idea about how to proceed with the research.
  • You will have to find books and articles on the topic you have chosen.
  • Evaluate all the information you have collected. Evaluation of information will help you to understand your topic extensively and exhaustively.

For any researcher, one of the most important tasks is to find information; and it is one of the most difficult tasks as well. While looking for information on your research topic, you can take the help of the following types of sources -

  • Information timeline
  • Resources with background information
  • Libraries
  • Internet
  • Primary, secondary, tertiary sources
  • Scholarly journals, trade journals and magazine
  • Take some time off

Research will take up a lot of your time and it can be tiring. So, it is important that you take some time off from your engineering research and relax. You will not be able to work on your research efficiently if you are tired and exhausted.
