Heating San Diego might not be used often since it’s so warm throughout the county, but when the temperature does go down a little bit, we Californians aren’t quite used to it. Heat to easterners may sound crazy, but sometimes it’s what we need. Here are some tips to crush the cold when the temperature starts to ease down.

Tips for the cooler side of California

Whether you’re running the A/C or trying to keep in a little heat, making sure you have great insulation is key for heating in San Diego. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to keep heat out or in, as insulation is your best friend, regardless.

Types of insulation

Blanket insulation – typically made of fiberglass

Blown insulation – cellulose and fiberglass

Spray foam insulation – open and closed cell

Foam board insulation

Which one is best is really up to the installation technician. You can even ask your HVAC contractor for help. Some prefer different ones depending on the location and structure of your home. When you have great insulation, you are saving money regardless of the temperature. You won’t be cranking the A/C on high when the air is staying in your home, and your money won’t be flying out of the window when you have great insulation for heat.

A portable heater is a great way to radiate heat to a general area, rather than the whole home. It also allows you to focus on a certain temperature in your vicinity so you can turn it as it cools down easier and quicker.

Types of heating

Central heating – much like central air, central heating systems often come in a combo set, with air conditioning as well. This is a system that heats (and cools) an interior of the building. With great insulation and proper installation, you don’t have to worry about any of the inner air escaping. Instead of a portable heater in one room, central air hits all rooms wherever the vents are located.

Portable heating – Portable heating is much like a portable air conditioner. When you have a portable heater, you have a small and compact machine that stands somewhere in any given room to make heat. Make sure it has a tip over switch for optimal safety. These often come in sleek and safe designs for fashionable heating in a cold area of your home.

Furnaces – With central heating and heat pumps becoming so popular, furnaces aren’t as common in new homes as they used to be; however, they still do exist and all the major manufacturers like Rheem, Bryant and Ruud still carry them.

A good furnace will heat the entire home, but unfortunately, furnaces do not include air. For that, you’ll need a heat pump.

In conclusion

While you may not need Heating in San Diego often, it does come in handy. Having a portable heater and great insulation in California is a win-win. You have the option for minimal heat, but the option to save money when your air isn’t going out of the window. It’s important to make sure the structure of your home is right for efficiency in the future.
