Tips For Moving A Grand Piano

Grand pianos are some of the most often damaged items by movers. This is because they are particularly complex. This guide offers effective tips for dismounting, securing, loading, and padding grand pianos. These guidelines will keep the piano safe, enhance client’s confidence in expert movers, and reduce insurance claims for grand pianos.

• Three experts

This is the least number of professions who are supposed to handle a grand piano during transportation. Sometimes the instrument needs to pass up or down the stairs and an extra individual can be called for help.

• Accurate inventory

The condition of the piano before moving must be thoroughly scrutinized. Pictures are the most effective means of recording the condition. Then, after it reaches the destination, it is examined again or damages.   

• Labeled carriage bags

When the different piano parts are dismantled, the hardware pieces need special storage of part bags with proper labels to avoid confusion during reassembly. A special box is secluded to hold hinge, screws, bolts, and others.  

• Protect the furniture

The music rack is taken off the track and secured in a furniture pad. When removing the lid, the hinge pins are loosened while care is taken not to damage the wooden parts with pliers. For more safety, the pliers can be coated with fabric to reduce its sharpness. The lid is put in clean furniture pad.

• Screw handling

As the screws are removed, care must be taken not to drop off the braces. Furthermore, the pushrods need special attention so that they do not get curved. While facing the piano, mark the pushrods with appropriate numbers using a masking tape. When the masking tape is absent, labeled parts bags can be used. Numbering the pushrods is crucial so that they may be assembled back into their correct position and let pedals function as required.
