TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE LEARNING / TIPS FOR SCORING HIGH IN EXAMS.
1. SET GOALS
You should prepare your study by setting goals. Goals are necessary to make you keep moving.
● know WHY you are studying (for you just to pass well in exams, finishing college, graduating with first class, satisfying your parents, having professional knowledge about your field of work for future career). No matter what your goal is, it should be an impulse for studying.
● Believe in yourself, your goals are achievable. You should be able to achieve them within the particular period of time and with definite efforts. No need for compromising, Be realistic.
2. ORGANISE YOUR STUDY SPACE.
Organizing your study space helps you to study effectively and helps to focus on your study material. It provides space to spread your notes and textbooks. Make a habit of studying in the same place everyday, it helps to remember what you've read.
●Make your study space perfect for studying;
i. Get yourself a desk (or table) and chair.
ii. Make sure everything is at hand whenever you need them.
iii. Get rid of clutter.
3. STAY AWAY FROM DISTRACTION AND USELESS THOUGHTS.
One of the hardest part about studying is not getting distracted.
● Electronic devices are big distraction while studying, make sure you turn off your phone, laptop and television. It Is important to fine a place for your phone that is out of reach, out of sight and most especially out of mind. Whenever you need your phone and laptop to study... stay away from social media. It distracts a lot.
● It is best if you put your phone somewhere near but not within sight, backpack or a drawer. If you are worried about an important call, only allow it to ring for phone calls or put it in "Do Not Disturb" mode.
● Do not let your personal life affect your academics.
4. CREATE A TIME TABLE.
This would help to organize your time, schedule your break especially when you have multiple subjects. This helps you to manage your time for each subject.
i. Get a timer.
ii. Set your timer for 30-45 minutes, and focus on a single task until the timer rings.
iii. When a session ends, mark it and record what you completed.
iv. Enjoy 5 – 10 minute break.
v. After four intervals, take a longer, 20- to 30-minute break.
5. TAKE GOOD NOTES.
Good note taking is the brass tacks of good study. If you take a good note in the class, you’re set up for good grades. When you study, your notes should bring back the entire sequence of the ideas presented in the class.
Write out all your subject/course outlines.
This will help your thoughts about a topic and make you prepare well for an exam. If you notice some parts of a lecture missing from your notes, consult your textbook or ask other students or your lecturer for help to complete the missed parts. And
You can record each session so that you can review it later to find the parts you’ve missed in your notes.
6. DAILY PLAN/TO DO LIST.
Make plan every day on Works to be done, syllabus to cover, assignments, homework and lots more. It helps you to update your works. Run your day, don’t let it run you.
● WRITE OUT YOUR PLAN EVERY DAY
Writing down your day plan is a great time management practice. Every single day.
● MAKE YOUR PLAN AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY
Planning at the same time of day, you create a habit. And good habit have the power to keep you moving.
● IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU ARE PLANNING TO FAIL.
Make sure you have plans always. Then you are good to go.
7. KNOW YOUR BEST TIME AND PLACE.
Are you the type person that study during the day or in the night? Your study time should be whenever you are most alert (afternoons are usually the time of least alertness).
Find a convenient place to study, and make sure all the materials you need are available before you start studying. Getting up to search for items essential to your progress if not, it will break your concentration, and waste study time. If you’re in for the long time reading, you can get yourself a snack and a drink.
● If a quiet place is not readily available, then listen to music such as classical or jazz on a low
volume to help to block out conversation and other disruptive noises. Music has the added benefit of keeping you more attentive.
● Do not make your bed your study place, it is very attractive to sleep.
8. EFFECTIVE STUDY TECHNIQUES.
Underline the important points. It helps you to remember while testing yourself or in exam. Jot after reading helps to recall what you have read. Making use of flash cards, they are legitimate study tool. Use of the front of the card to jot down points.
9. TEST YOURSELF.
Solve many past questions as much as possible concerning what you have read to know your capability on the topic or subject. it helps you to score high in exams and gives you a lot of self confidence.
10. STUDY WITH FRIENDS.
Teach your friends what you have read so far in your own understanding. It helps you to learn more. It is one of the best ways to learn.
11. TAKE BREAKS.
Study for long time affects the brain one way or the other. Take break after a long period of reading… At least 5 - 10 minutes of break, it helps your mind to relax which will make it easier to remember what you've read. You can check your messages, watch TV, physical exercise, etc.
12. STAY HEALTH AND EAT GOOD FOOD.
Food can help you to study well. It makes your brain to run at full power. Food that can help you study well includes, protein rich food (milk, egg, etc), fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds. Stay away from too much starch and sugar, it reduces concentration. Drink plenty of water, it helps a lot.
13. SLEEP WELL.
7 - 9 hours of sleep helps to refresh and relax your brain and improve your ability to think logically.
14. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.
Do not look down on yourself. Have the belief that YOU CAN and YOU WILL. Do not feed your mind with MEDIOCRITY.
-Lastly, don’t compair yourself with anyone, and do not COMPETE with others. The more you compete, the more you feel depress.
