There are many women who experience heavier menstrual bleeding; especially during the first three days of menstruation. The blood flow is usually affected by lifestyle, diet and hormonal changes. If the periods become lighter after three days, then it is considered to be normal. If, on the other hand, the flow exceeds more than five days and is heavier, then it can indicate heavy periods. Girls and women start feeling tired when they experience heavy periods.

There are certain signs which tell that a girl/woman is experiencing heavy periods:

If the tampon/pad has to be changed after every 1-2 hours

     Frequent leakage is happening

Two menstrual products have to be used at one time

Large blood clots are being passed

     Feeling anemic or tired

Heavy periods are caused during the stage of puberty when hormonal levels are still adjusting. An imbalance between estrogen and progesterone can cause heavy periods. Girls and women who used to consume pills before and have ditched consuming them lately, there are chances of the periods getting heavier because the body had earlier got adjusted to hormones. Below are a few tips to follow to make the heavier periods lighter:

     Iron Supplements:

These supplements help prevent anemia and make women experiencing heavy periods feel better. It helps in improving their energy levels and social/physical functioning. The consumption of iron supplements even helps in decreasing depression and anxiety symptoms.

     Birth Control Pills

Estrogen present in birth control pills promotes thickening and clotting of blood which reduces the menstrual flow for most women. It is suggested to consult a doctor before starting with the consumption of birth control pills. Women who have in the past suffered from blood clots or migraines should not consume the traditional birth control pills.

     Vitamin C

Consuming foods rich in Vitamin C such as citrus fruits can help in the prevention of iron deficiency in the body.

     Progestin

It is a medication subscribed for treating heavy bleeding. It works by reducing the effects of estrogen in the body and slowing the growth of uterine lining. This medicine also has some side effects so one should consume if subscribed.

     Eat green vegetables and fruits

It is better to avoid eating sugary foods and sweets during periods because doing this can lead to more bloating. Green leafy vegetables like cabbage and spinach contain a lot of essential vitamins required including iron and bioflavonoids which help to reduce the estrogen level in the body. Consuming a healthy diet prevents the feelings of nausea, dizziness and regulates the menstrual flow.

In addition to following the above-stated tips and tricks, females should wear extra-large sanitary napkins to avoid leakage. These napkins provide extra protection because of high absorption. One can purchase ultra-thin sanitary napkins available in the market which are super absorbent in nature with extra-large sizes for wearing at night. The soft sanitary napkins do not even create rashes or irritation on the skin.
